UN Accuses Venezuela of Using Death Squads to Promote Fear

The UN accused Venezuela of using death squads to promote fear after a shocking number of alleged extrajudicial killings.

The UN will be presenting a report today with findings about the deaths the Venezuelan government has attributed to resisting arrest. The number goes up to 1569 by May this year.

The UN stated that Venezuela should end the grave violations of economic, social, civil, political and cultural rights. Nicolás Maduro’s administration has not responded to the report. 

Over 80 Migrants Feared Dead After Boat Capsized

Over 80 migrants are feared dead after their boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia.

The boat was carrying over double its capacity when it sank. 

Lorena Lando, head of the International Organization for Migration in Tunisia says fishermen were able to rescue four men from the water, however one died while receiving emergency treatment.

Federal Government Plan for Change in Expat Tax Has Lapsed

A $581 million Federal Government plan to change capital gains tax arrangements for expats has lapsed, but Treasurer josh Frydenberg says the Coalition is committed to its policy change. 

The Coalition Government’s May 2017 budget announcement to deny the main residence exemption for Australians who sell their homes while living abroad caused a stir after it was announced. 

The proposed change was a retrospective denial of the exemption that goes as far back as 1985, when capital gains tax was introduced.

UN To Inspect Australian Detention Centres

United Nations Human Rights Inspectors will have a completely unfettered access to all places of detention when they visit Australia in the coming months.

The chair of the subcommittee, Sir Malcolm Evans said he was confident the Australian authorities would understand and cooperate with the inspectors.

Australia’s detention facilities have been widely criticised, and subjected to countless investigations, reports, and royal commissions. 

This is the first-time Australia is subject to the inspection.

Japanese-Inspired Retreat to be Built in The Gold Coast

A Japanese Zen themed retreat is set to be built in the Gold Coast Hinterlands.

The Sakya development has been approved for a 33,150 sqm site on Estelle road in the remote Currumbin Valley.

Sakya is headed by Jin Xu and Mi Li, who described the plan as a cultural exchange envoy, fostering a bridge between cultures.

Gold Coast Beaches Closed Due to Weather Conditions

All Gold Coast beaches have now been closed because of worsening surf conditions. 

Some beaches in Burleigh were open early yesterday morning, however as conditions worsened they also closed. 

The council warns locals against walking along the beach, particularly with children as strong tidal surges could knock them down.

PM Confirms Missing Aussie in North-Korea Safely Released

Prime Minister, Scott Morrison has confirmed the missing australian who was detained in North Korea has been safely released. 

Detained student, Alek Sigley, arrived in Beijing with the help of Sweedish officials on Thursday and is now staying at the Australian Embassy in Beijing. 

Mr Sigley told reporters he is feeling ‘great’ however he did not offer any details about why he was detained.
