Thousands Exepcted at Brisbane's Lifeline Bookfest

The Brisbane Lifeline Bookfest is on again this week with thousands expected to attend the event at the convention & Exhibition centre.

Over 22 loaded semi-trailers filled with, books, music, DVDs, and boardgames will be up for sale, with all proceeds going to the Lifeline support line.

Lifeline crisis support, offer sucide prevention bereavement and  support 24 hour a day, 365 days a year.

Ancient Tower In Afghanistan Collapses

An ancient tower in Ghanzi, Afghanistan, has collapsed.

Officials say heavy rain caused the collapse, but some have accused the government of negligence to protest their historic artefacts.

The city’s architecture is admired across the globe, but difficult for foreign tourists to visit because of the Taliban Insurgency.

Boris Johnson Favourite To Become Next Prime Minister Of The UK

Boris Johnson is the favourite to become the next prime minister of the UK, after he won the first round of voting on Thursday.

The former foreign minister, who is a supporter of Brexit, received 114 votes out of the possible 313.

Seven candidates will progress to the next round of voting, which will be held next week.  

Research Shows Severity of Australian Drought And Ice Loss In Antarctica

Researchers from the Australian National University have processed satellite data that shows the severity of the drought in Australia and the ice loss in Antarctica.

The snapshots found parts of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania to be drier in December of 2018 than during the millennium drought.

The lead researcher Paul Tregoning says the millennium drought which lasted from 2001 to 2009 was the worst since European settlement and the new data points to even drier times ahead.

Australia's Hong Kong Community Urge Australia To Take Stronger Stance On Extradition Laws

The Hong Kong community in Australia are pressuring the Federal Government to take a stronger stance on Hong Kong’s extradition laws.

The Foreign Affairs ministry has voiced concern about the extradition bill, but the local Hong Kong community want a stronger response from the government, particularly from Gladys Liu, who was born in Hong Kong.

Jane Poon, Australian Hong-Kong Link leader, says the Australian government’s comments do not reflect the seriousness of the issue.  

 

 

Landmark Agreement To Benefit Logan Ratepayers And Residents

Logan ratepayers and residents of Greater Flagstone and Yarrabilba will benefit from a landmark agreement between Logan City Council, the State Government and key developers.

Under the 45 year deal, Yarrabilba and Greater Flagstone Developers will contribute $1.2 billion to upgrade roads and deliver water wastewater, while the Council will fund $1.2 Billion towards infrastructure.

Ecuador Legalises Same-Sex Marriage

Ecuador’s highest court legalises same-sex marriage after a lengthy legal battle by gay rights advocates and couples.

Same-sex unions have been legal in Ecuador for a decade but the new ruling passes legislation ensuring equal treatment for all under the country’s marriage law.

The President of the Ecuadorian Equality Foundation says the ruling is a joy for the LGBTQI community and makes Ecuador a more egalitarian country.

Sudan's Former President Charged with Corruption

Sudan’s former president has been charged with corruption, after the military ousted him in April, following months of protests over his leadership.

Representatives of the protestors had been in discussions with the military over who would be the next leader, however these negotiations collapsed on June 3rd when a military crackdown left dozens of protesters dead.
