Ukranian president forced to debate empty lectern

Ukranian President Petro Poroshenko was forced to debate an empty lectern after opposition leader and comedian Volodynyer Zelenskiy failed to turn up.

Zelenskiy says although him and Poroshenko suggested for the debate to occur, neither of them agreed on a date. However, Zelenskiy wished for the debate to be two days before the April 21 election.

Zelenskiy currently polls higher than Poroshenko.

 

Australian private schools accused of taking advantage of schooling systems for top university spots

Private school students are given an advantage into university courses thanks to exclusive International Baccalaureate (IB) not on offer in public schools.

The IB is an alternative course to the High School Certificate (HSC) or Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) being offered to private school students in order to be ranked against a smaller pool of students when entering university.

Australian recycling being sent to illegal processing sites in Malaysia

Overnight 60 minutes has released their investigation into Australia’s efforts to recycle.

The investigation uncovered that Australian recycling was sent to dozens of illegal processing sites in Malaysia, where discarded plastics are often dumped, buried or even burned.

Australia as a nation has dumped 71,000 tonnes in 12 months exacerbating illegal practices while harming the environment and people of Malaysia.

Local forum to give Brisbane youth a voice

Students who marched against the Prime Minister earlier this year for climate change want to hold local forums so local politicians can listen to them.

The forum will consist of a panel of young speakers, parents and teachers who will present their points of view on the issues raised, with candidates from major parties to respond to these.

The event will take place this Tuesday (the 15th of April) at AHEPA Hall in Boundary Street, West End.

Crayfish being poached in south-east Queensland

Ecologists fear freshwater crayfish in Queensland are being targeted by poachers.

The Lamington Spiny Crayfish is found in specific mountains in south-east Queensland  and Northern New South Wales, however, they are being poached from the Gold Coast hinterland and used for BBQ’s. Ecologists worry this could have an impact on climate change.

A $522 fine will be issued for those caught poaching the crayfish.

Tennesee bear strolls through Maryville Denso Plant

A bear in Tennessee has been relocated after being caught strolling through a Denso Plant in Maryville.

On Tuesday night the bear was caught on film in the plant and returned to the scene the next day where it was shot with a tranquilizer by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

TWAR says the bear has been released with an ear tag and "aversive conditioning" designed to dissuade it from coming back to the plant or area.

Australians are being urged to get vaccinated before the winter season. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt is recommending they “get vaccinated from mid-April during the peak of the influenza period”.

Six million doses of influenza shots will be free through the federal government’s National Immunisation Program.

Grill'd goes "meat-free" to encourage flexitarian diet

Today the burger chain Grill’d is going meat-free across all of their stores to encourage customers to swap meat for more vegetables a few times a week - a diet known as flexitarianism. 

Grill’d’s new menu includes plant-based burger patties from Beyond Meat which replicate the taste of beef burgers.

Founder and managing director of Beyond Meat, Simon Crowe, says “...[he] genuinely believe[s] plant-based alternatives will form a huge part of the future of burgers”.

Data map helping Queensland voters for upcoming election

Griffith Uni News has created a data map to help Queensland voters have an informed say in the upcoming election.

The map was developed by Griffith University’s Regional Innovation Data Lab (RIDL), and the application allows voters to dive into important decision-making data on any Queensland electorate in an easy-to-digest format.

Griffith expert Professor John Wanna says “Queensland has some electorates with the lowest political engagement in Australia.”
