Brisbane City Council has committed $550 million to build 5 new green bridges across the city, but has no plans to expand the notorious Walter Taylor Bridge in the city’s south-west.

The single-lane both-ways bridge connects Indooroopilly and Chelmer   

Attempts to Uncover Great Barrier Reef Lobbying Spoiled

Legal academic Prof Reece Walters from Deakin University has criticised Australia’s freedom of information regime after spending two and a half years trying to shed light on the government’s efforts to keep the Great Barrier Reef from being labelled as “in danger”.

Despite a group of Australian and US environmental lawyers determining that the GBR easily met the criteria to be listed as “in danger” by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, officials from the Australian government spent over $100,000 to successfully lobby the committee against the move.

Murray-Darling Basin Regulation Change

The ALP says it is prepared to override state governments to fix the regulation of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Labor says it will be prepared to use the powers outlined in the Water Act and the Labor-controlled basin states of Queensland and Victoria to ensure stronger environmental outcomes.

The current recovery plan was pegged as an absolute bare minimum from the outset by science groups but has been crippled by management failures, water theft, and political stubbornness from NSW and Victoria.

President Trump Cuts International Aid

President Donald Trump has blasted Central American countries for sending migrants to America and cut aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

A surge of asylum seekers from the three countries tried to enter the United States within the last few days and Trump accused the nations of “setting up” migrant caravans and sending them north.

Trump said there was a “very good likelihood” he would close the border this week if Mexico did not stop immigrants from reaching the United States.

New Brisbane public school plans released to public

The concept master plan for a new public school in Brisbane has been released to the public.

The school is to be built in Dutton Park between Gladstone Road, Grantham Street and Annerley Road as a $800Mn part of the state’s Building Future Schools program.

It is scheduled to open for Grade 7 in Term 1 2021 and add another Grade each following year to increase the supply of catchment schooling in the West End, Dutton Park, and South Brisbane areas.

Toowoomba Regional Council Turns on Wivenhoe Pipeline

Following the completion of commissioning activities, the Toowoomba Regional Council are due to start pumping operations in Wivenhoe Dam from Early April -  in line with the Cressbrook Dam falling below the 40% capacity trigger point.

Mayor Paul Antonio says the combined dam levels in Toowoomba are about 35.5% and although the allocation of water from Wivenhoe won’t fill the dams completely, it will provide water security for future years.

Two months on and thousands still homeless in Townsville

Residents in North Queensland are struggling to put a roof over their heads in the aftermath of the Townsville floods, with rental vacancies across the city now almost non-existent.

The Real Estate Institute’s Zone Chairman Wayne Nicholson has noted the distinct increase in rental enquiries, with some properties having up to 37 people turn up for a viewing, instead of the usual two or three.   

Smiths Chips ferris wheel endangers staff safety

Three female staff on the Smiths Chips Ferris Wheel at Sydney's Circular Quay have been left fearing for their lives after the door to the carriage broke off mid-air.

The three women were reportedly in a carriage near the top of the ferris wheel when the door got caught, ripped off and fell to the ground, causing the carriage and the women to lurch forward.

The incident occurred on the first day of the Smith's "Spin to Win" promotion near the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney's Circular Quay.
