Albert Street Sky Scraper Headache
Problems have emerged for the planned 91-storey skyscraper on Albert Street, with its earthworks predicted to hit the Cross River Rail underground tunnel zone.
Singapore developer and property group, World Class Land, attempted to add three more basement levels to the design in August 2017, which was later withdrawn in March 2018.
Million Dollar Milton Park
Brisbane City Council has plans to design a new million-dollar park in Milton, with Brisbane’s new lord mayor Adrian Schrinner being a key supporter.
The park will be on the corner of Railway Terrace and Manning Street and will cost about $1.7 million dollars to turn the block of grass into a hospitable space.
Milton residents were surveyed to gauge their interest and more than 400 responses were positive towards the new development.
Taxpayers Funding British Boarding School for Australian Sub Workers
Australians working in France on the new submarine program are using taxpayer dollars to send their children to British boarding schools, as local classes are not taught in English.
The parents are among dozens of naval engineers and architects posted in Cherbourg to work on the $50 billion dollar Defence project launched for French company Naval Group to help Australia design submarines.
The boarding school, St John’s College, costs 53 000 Australian dollars a year.
Measles Outbreak in Brooklyn
A public health emergency has been declared in parts of Brooklyn by New York’s Mayor, Bill de Blasio, ordering all residents to get the measles vaccination.
The order comes as a way to try and contain a measles outbreak which is primarily concentrated in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.
It is concerning people living in areas where some residents oppose vaccines on religious grounds.
Mr de Blasio said, “it was time to take a more muscular approach."
Uber to introduce Boat Service in Mumbai
Uber has come up with a way to beat traffic jams in India’s financial Capital, Mumbai, by introducing a boat service.
Speedboat rides are offered on six to eight seater boats, which cost 5,700 rupees or $115, and larger vessels that can seat up to 10 people which costs 9,500 rupees $192.
Uber doesn’t accept bookings for an individual seats but rather for an entire boat.
13 and 14 Year Old Girls Charged With Arson Over Fire in Nambour
Two teenage girls have been charged with arson after setting a fire in Nambour on Monday morning.
The teenagers, aged 13 and 14, lit the fire in a downstairs bedroom, causing significant damage and sending a woman in her 40s and her 20-year-old son to the hospital. The fire also took the lives of the family pets.
The girls were seen fleeing the scene by a firefighter called in to fight the flames.
Queensland School Students' Writing Standard on the Slide
The writing standard of Queensland school students is continuing to slide, according to 2018’s national NAPLAN results.
Despite improvements in reading, numeracy, grammar and spelling, Year 7 students are continuing to struggle with writing, with the average falling by 3.5% since 2008.
Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace said the decline in writing standards is a nationwide issue, claiming the Morrison government is to blame for the lack of reform.
Central Queensland Couple Attempt to Trademark an Aboriginal Plant Name
A bid to trademark the Aboriginal plant name Gumby Gumby has sparked outrage amongst the Aboriginal community and fueled talks for reforming Australian intellectual property laws.
A couple in central Queensland have filed for exclusive rights to the name, in a move Ghungalu elder Steve Kemp remarks is problematic for his people, as it prevents them for using their own assets for commercial purposes.
Under current intellectual property law, any Australian individual or company can apply for the rights to Aboriginal products or language.
Federal Government Funds $33Mn Rottnest Island Makeover
The Federal government and the state of WA have committed to a $33 million makeover for Rottnest Island in a bid to keep up with the growing tourism surge on Australia’s west coast.
The money will be put towards redeveloping Rottnest’s Fuel Jetty, and the construction of a barge landing, so as to reduce pressure on the main jetty at Thompson Bay.
WA Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said the move is the biggest funding commitment for the island in more than a decade.
Soldier Killed While Trying to Protect Protesters in Sudan
Aiming for President Oman Al-Bashir to step down, a soldier has been killed while trying to protect protestors who have staged a sit-in outside of military headquarters in Sudan.
Clashes have broken out after Sudanese security forces used live fire, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the anti-government sit-in outside the compound.
Footage was posted online by activists that showed the soldiers moving peacefully among the protest, which is one of the biggest demonstrations since protests erupted in December.
