Taxman Targets Uber

Uber drivers and AirBnb hosts who avoid paying tax are the subject of a proposed new income reporting regime.

Treasury will release plans on Wednesday to ensure those in the gig sharing economy are paying their fair share of tax, however the reforms will focus on those working in the sector, and not the companies themselves.

Assistant minister for treasury, Zed Seselja, says the sharing economy has seen significant growth in Australia, but the government is committed to ensuring all individuals are paying their fair share of tax.

Just Not Cricket

Almost half of the crowd left in the dark after a power outage at last weeks Big Bash match at the Gabba, have not been able to claim their promised complimentary Test tickets.

Only 14 000 tickets to the Gabba Test match starting on Thursday, have been released by Cricket Australia, well short of the 26 000 spectators at Thursday’s Brisbane Heat game.

Those who did not receive an email containing the free tickets are being urged to contact Queensland Cricket, who say it is simply a communication issue.

Tighter Safety for Hikers in Central Australia

The grief-stricken family of dead German tourist Monika Billen, have pleaded for tighter safety requirements to protect hikers in Central Australia.

Some of the safety suggestions made by the family include mandatory GPS trackers, detailed logs, and checkpoints at each stop, but the Northern Territory Parks Department claims this is not the only answer.

Argentinian Footballer on Missing Plane

Authorities say Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala was on board a small passenger plane that disappeared over the English Channel on Monday.

Officials say no survivors are expected to be found, with the search for the plane resuming on Tuesday, after being called off due to extreme weather conditions.

Sala had signed for English Premier League club Cardiff City, in a record $27 million fee, and had been on his way to join the club.
 

Labor's $1 Billion Hydrogen Plan for QLD

Labour plans to set Gladstone as the “hydrogen capital of Australia” by establishing a National Hydrogen Innovation Hub in the small regional town, 550km north of Brisbane.

Hydrogen is at the front of a $1 billion federal labour plan to boost the renewable energy industry, with predictions the industry could be worth $10 billion in the next 20 years, whilst creating over 16,000 new jobs in regional Queensland.

These funds will go to Clean Energy Finance Corporation supporting clean hydrogen development.

Energy Companies Under Fire

Two energy companies have been given a fine of $40,000 each after cutting power to people on life support.

Queensland based distributor, Energex, and ACT company Evoenergy were both fined after they potentially put lives at risk during planned outages as they did not warn customers on life support that their power would be cut ahead of time.

Mexican Murder Maelstrom

Mexico’s murder rate broke new records in 2018, with an increase of 15% from the previous year, as the country’s violent drug war drags on.

Figures this week show that over 28 000 homicide cases were opened, presenting a serious challenge for new President Lopez Obrador, who promised calmer times after 12 years of militarised crackdowns.

He has so far focussed on stamping out fuel theft, which costs the country $3 billion annually.

 

Tattersall's Vows to Preserve Inclusivity

An exclusive Brisbane member’s organisation, Tattersall’s Club, has vowed to defend any attempts to overturn its historic move to allow women to join the organisation.

Despite male members of the 153 year old club voting to expand its membership in December to include women, there have been reports of opponents considering a legal challenge against the decision.
