Brexit campaigner under investigation

The UK Government is being urged by the opposition to halt Brexit proceedings as a prominent ‘Leave’ campaigner has become subject of an investigation by the National Crime Agency.

It is alleged Mr Arron Banks, the man behind the Leave EU campaign, is not the true source of £8m in funding, as was disclosed to the electoral commission.

In a statement from Downing Street, the Government said they would not make comment on the open investigation, however Labour MPs say Brexit must be put on hold until Britain knows the extent of “crimes against democracy”.

AI as Artists

In New York, an original painting generated by artificial intelligence has sold for more than 38 times its anticipated price—igniting the question of whether AI could become a threat to human creativity.

The painting was a portrait of Edmond de Belamy; it’s a blurry picture of a man in a dark frock coat and it was auctioned off for $610,000.

Chinese Man Flees to US after Helping People Pass Great Firewall

A Chinese man who helped thousands of citizens bypass China’s Great Firewall has been forced to flee to the United States, over fears for his family’s safety.

The Chinese government built this digital border in 2014 to control the internet, but Zou Chengfeng began teaching people how to get past it. As demand for uncensored content grew with the crackdown of internet freedom, Mr Zou created a free tutorial in 2016 for people who approached him on Chinese messaging app WeChat.

Helmets On or Off?

The nation’s largest cycling lobby is calling for more relaxed helmet laws.

They say helmets should be optional when riding on footpaths or otherwise off-road.

This supposedly comes after a lot of research into the safety and necessity for helmets, and this will be the first time helmet laws will be reviewed since the introduction of mandatory cycling helmets in the 90s.

ABC Pay Jump

ABC’s Michelle Guthrie’s pay jumped to nearly $1 million dollars before her sacking in September.

The ABC's Annual Report for the year to June 2018 reveals Ms Guthrie was paid over $960,000 in 2018, compared to $890,000 the year before.

Ms Guthrie has since lodged an adverse action claim against the ABC with the Fair Work Commission.

Two Polls in One Year

More than 200 QLD council delegates have rejected a request to change the date of upcoming council elections so that voters don’t have to go to the polls twice in the same year.

The issue was triggered by the government shifting to four year election terms in 2017.

There will be no change to the 2020 elections, however things may be different in 2024 and beyond.

From 2020, Queensland residents will vote in their council election in March and then in the state election in October.

Synagogue Shooting Suspect Charged

The man who opened fire on a synagogue in Pittsburgh killing 11 people and wounded six others has been charged with hate crime offences as part of a 44 count indictment.

The federal prosecutors have indicated that they are planning to seek the death penalty for Robert Bowers who opened fire at the Tree of Life Synagogue last Saturday.

Toddler Fight Club

A childcare centre in the USA has come under fire after a video emerged showing toddlers punching each other in an apparent “fight club” organised by the teachers.

The preschoolers are wearing green “hulk” fists and punching each other in the body and head, and one teacher is pictured jumping up and down in apparent excitement.

Local police investigated the footage but no charges were filed.

Both teachers were fired but the centre was allowed to remain open.
