Suicide Bombing in Tunisia

Nine people have been wounded in a suicide bombing near a busy shopping centre in Tunisia’s capital, Tunis.

The suicide bomber, a 30-year-old woman was the only fatality.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing.

2000 new Centrelink employees to boost national operations

Queensland is set to see an improvement in Centrelink operations with more than 2000 call centre workers set to be phased in across the nation.

Over 800 of these new jobs are in Brisbane, with the remaining positions based in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Minister for Human Services and Digital Transformation Michael Keenan believes those relying on Centrelink’s services will notice a big difference in operations.  

BCC delays Anzac renos past Remembrance Day

The Brisbane Council has announced the ANZAC square renovations won’t be ready by Remembrance Day as previously estimated.

According to the council website, poor weather delayed the opening and renovations are now not set to be completed until December 2018.

RSL Queensland president Tony Ferris said he is ‘dismayed’ by the events, but affirmed the RSL will continue to ‘pull out all stops’ to properly commemorate the day.

Turnbull and Morrison face off over embassy move

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has warned Prime Minister Scott Morrison about moving the Australian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

After a meeting with Indonesian president Joko Widodo, Turnbull said moving the embassy would prompt a ‘very negative reaction’ from Indonesia.

Indonesia is currently the largest Muslim majority country in the world.

Aussie teens starving to be skinny, study says

Australian teenagers as young as 14 are increasingly resorting to extreme weight control measures, according to a new government study.

While a small minority met the criteria for anorexia or bulimia, significant numbers of young teenagers are reportedly skipping meals, vomiting or taking laxatives to stay thin.

The study found that teenagers aged 14 to 15 who dieted had elevated depression and anxiety levels, but their actions had little physical impact on their bodies.

Lion Air search deepens

Reports have revealed the Lion Air flight that crashed into the Java Sea on Monday had technical issues on a previous flight.

CEO of Lion Air, Edward Strait, said the technical issue was resolved according to procedure.

Rescue teams have successfully found the plane’s tail, but continue to search for its body and the 189 missing passengers.

Angela Merkel to resign at term

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced she will step down from her position at the end of her term in 2021.

Following a stint of recent election setbacks and poor polls, Merkel said she would not seek re-election as leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany.

Merkel has been its leader since 2000, however support has started shifting away from the major centre parties since the 2017 general election.

Thousands march in Taiwan gay pride parade for referendum vote

Nearly 13, 000 people marched in Taipei before a landmark vote next month on LGBT rights.

Drag queens rubbed shoulders with Christian pastors as tens of thousands of people took part in Taiwan's gay pride parade, the largest in Asia.

In May 2017, Taiwan’s top court legalised gay marriage and said its decision must be implemented within two years. The island will hold a series of public votes on same-sex marriage on November 24.
