Tampon tax down the toilet

In breaking national news, the tampon tax is down the toilet after the states and territories agreed to make sanitary products exempt from GST.

 

The decision was reached this morning after state and territory treasurer's met and unanimously agreed to pass the Federal Government’s proposal.

 

It follows an 18 year long campaign to remove the 10% tax on pads and tampons.

 

Calls for Domestic Violence legislation update

Domestic violence support services are calling for a update to legislation to help women on temporary visas as womens shelters are being flooded with temporary visa holders  

 

Currently, the Migration Act allows for some holders to apply for family violence related assistance, however some people are not eligible due to issues concerning business, working and/ or student visas

 

First woman to win the Nobel Physics prize in 55 years

Canadian Scientist Donna Strickland has become the first woman to win the Nobel Physics Prize in 55 years for her pioneering work on laser pulses.

 

Of the 112 physics prizes the Nobel committee has awarded since 1901, the only women winners before Strickland were Marie Curie in 1903 and Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1963.

 

Journalists life sentences in Turkey Upheld

A Turkish court has upheld life sentences for prominent journalists Ahmet Altan, Mehmet Altan, Nazli Ilicak and three others, on charges of aiding the plotters of a failed military coup in 2016, according to local media.

 

The journalists, who were originally sentenced in February, were previously sentenced to life in prison for alleged links to the network of US-based religious leader, accused by Ankara of orchestrating the coup attempt.

Charlottesville Rioters charged with riot offences

Four men linked to a white supremacist group were charged this week in connection with the far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The men were charged with riot act violations as they travelled from California to incite a riot and bring violence to the rally in August last year.

Each men faces ten years imprisonment if found guilty and the trial is expected to start at the end of this year.

Syrian man detained after spending 6 months in Malaysian airport

A Syrian man who spent more than 6 months living in a Malaysian airport has been removed and placed in police custody.

Hassan al-Kontar sent a video to SBS’s Go Back Where You Came From highlighting his situation of fleeing his war-torn homeland and becoming stuck in Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Soon after the video aired, he was taken into custody by Malaysian police and detained by the Department of Immigration.

An urgent recall has been issued for a cot over fears babies may become trapped.
