Hurricane Florence forces over one million to be evacuated from US coast

More than one million people have been forced to evacuate the eastern coast of the United States following the growth of Hurricane Florence.

The US National Hurricane Centre says the storm is intensifying, and could strengthen to near category five status.

The eye of the storm is forecast to make landfall late on Thursday or early Friday affecting coastal states from South Carolina to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Russia kicks off biggest ever war games

Russia has kicked off the biggest ever war games involving over 300,000 troops, including Chinese soldiers, in Eastern Siberia on Tuesday.

The massive military manoeuvres come as tensions between the West and Russia have intensified to the highest level since the days of the Soviet Union.

The drills have been condemned by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as a rehearsal for a "large-scale conflict".

PM Scott Morrison not supporting liberal gender quotas

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is not supporting the liberal party’s gender quotas in an attempt to boost the number of women in its ranks, with women currently making up less than a quarter of federal Liberal MPs.

Mr Morrison says women are under-represented in the party, but doesn't think quotas will topple the obstacles that are preventing more women from advancing.

He says whether or not quotas will be brought in is a matter for the Liberals' organisation wing.

Popular children’s toy under investigation

Australian authorities have launched an investigation into children’s toy Squishies, after a government investigation in Denmark found the toys contained toxic chemicals.

The Danish authorities recommend the toys be removed from shops and be disposed by parents.

Consumer regulators in both Western Australia and South Australia have confirmed they are investigating the toys following the Danish decision.

Brisbane Airport successfully trials biofuels

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has revealed Brisbane Airport has successfully trialled biofuels, jet fuels made from sugar and wood products, in 195 flights.

The success of the trial could lead to a multi-million dollar industry where Queensland could supply biofuels to the US Navy and to Australian and south-east Asian airports.

Biofuels burn with 80 per cent less carbon emissions than conventional hydrocarbon jet fuels.

QLD LNP MP’s face internal pressure over abortion laws

Queensland LNP MP’s are facing internal pressure to vote against a woman’s right to choose and have been warned they could risk preselection difficulties.

The opposition is yet to decide whether the LNP party will get a conscience vote on the abortion bill fronting in parliament in October.
