Car Parks removed as bikeways upgraded

28 car parks will be removed from the Southbank riverside area to make way for a multimillion dollar bikeway upgrade.

$5 million dollars will be spent on bike paths and associated infrastructure, with early stages of the project to enlarge the path connecting Dock Street and the Goodwill Bridge which is too narrow for its current level of traffic.

The upgrade will be funded by the $100 million dollars set aside by the Brisbane City Council for improvements to Brisbane’s active transport network before 2020.

North Queensland crops ruined after deluge and widespread flooding

Many North Queensland farmers are struggling after recent heavy rains and flooding severely damaged their crops.

Last week in Abergowrie, north of Townsville, farmer Michael Waring woke to find his cane and sunflower crops underwater, however the grower said he was lucky and does not expect the water to severely impact his June harvest.

Herbert and Ingham Cane Growers manager Peter Sheedy said others were not so fortunate and many farmers are still counting the cost of the flooding event.

The Death of Jason Stone

Last Monday, a homeless man named Jason Stone was killed by a rubbish truck while he slept in a laneway next to Anzac Square. Though the truck was a commercial vehicle, the council has been blamed for failing to provide adequate lighting in the laneway. This comes as new census figures reveal that homelessness in Australia has increased by 14% between 2011 and 2016. Ebony Wilson spoke to Karyn Walsh, the CEO of Micah Projects which helps the homeless through their Home for Good program.

Dungen & Woods: Myths 003

- Like Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, the teaming up of Dungen and Woods makes perfect sense, as they are similarly complementary in the styles of music they play. In the case of these two acts, you have Swedish psychedelic combo Dungen, a band who have pedalled indie rock with tripped out '60's influences since before Tame Impala and King Gizzard were even thought of.

The Double Happiness: City EP

- When anyone talks about The Double Happiness they always have a bit of fun right at the get-go letting off a description of their splintery-genre-explosion like a party-popper. “ alternative-spooky-surf-spaghetti-western-pop” was the last one I heard or you could just as easily go with “spooky-Tiki-surf-reverb-post-punk” . You get the idea and the band are worth it.

US school students protest about lack of gun legislation action

Thousands of students across the United States have left their classrooms to take part in a 17 minute vigil of silence to commemorate the 17 victims of the school shooting that took place at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida last month.

One month has passed since the shooting and today's vigil is another youth led initiative in the growing protest movement for the reform of American firearms legislation

Similar demonstrations are planned for the 20th of April to mark the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School Massacre.

Older women, migrants swell the ranks of Australia's homeless

Newly released census data has revealed the number of people in Australia who are homeless has risen by 15% since the 2011 Census.

More than 116,400 Australians were homeless on census night in 2016, with the largest number situated within the Melbourne area.

The data also revealed an increase in homelessness for older women, people under 25 and women and children escaping family violence.

15% of people who arrived in Australia between 2011 and 2015 are homeless.

Australia under fire over South African farmers visas

Home affairs minister Peter Dutton has received criticism from his South African counterparts after revealing his department was exploring ways to fast-track humanitarian visas for “persecuted” white farmers.

Mr Dutton said white farmers need help “from a civilized country like ours,” following increasing reports of farm murders and possible land displacements in South Africa.
