AFP not to lay charges after ‘Cabinet Files’ investigation

No charges will be laid by the Australian Federal Police following an investigation into the loss of hundreds of sensitive cabinet documents contained in The Cabinet Files.

The investigation was launched after ABC journalists obtained documents revealing secret cabinet deliberations, from a source who purchased two locked filing cabinets at a second-hand furniture sale in Canberra.

Huge turnout for Winnie Mandela’s funeral

Thousands of South African people turned out at Orlando Stadium in Soweto for the funeral of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on Saturday.

The politician and ex-wife of the former South African President, Nelson Mandela, was considered a heroine of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

The huge crowd sang and danced tributes and anthems to support those fighting for freedom in South Africa through decades of oppression.

The “mother of the nation” passed away at age 81 after a battling a long illness.

Vertical farms catching on in Australia

Growing vegetables and herbs vertically in shipping containers is a trend catching on in Australia, with the aim of reducing food waste and food miles.

The Canadian company Modular Farms Co. launched its first vertical hydroponic farm in Brisbane last month, and not only supplies fresh produce to vendors at the Eat Street Northshore markets, but also assists food rescue organisations like OzHarvest to provide food for people in need.

Hotels in Brisbane are getting cheaper and cheaper

Brisbane’s increasing number of hotels has led to cheaper, more vacant hotel rooms.  

Brisbane has opened up 4000 new hotel rooms since 2014, with another 1500 expected to open before the year ends, and at least 1600 more available by 2022.

However, Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Daniel Gschwind says it’s very difficult to smoothly match supply and demand as the fluctuating number of tourists are a challenge for existing hotels.

Flesh eating ulcers an ‘exploding epidemic’ in Victoria

A leading specialist on Victoria's outbreak of flesh-eating ulcers has accused the government of inaction and indecision amidst what is being termed an "exploding epidemic".

University of Melbourne Associate Professor Daniel O’Brien said more urgent funding was needed in order to stem the outbreak.

Confirmed infections have risen by 400 per cent in four years, with another 275 cases recorded in the past year, according to government figures.

Israel destroys Gaza tunnel

The Israeli military has disabled a major tunnel that was dug by militants that reached into Israel from the Gaza Strip, which is the fifth Gaza tunnel that has been destroyed in recent months.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said it was the longest and deepest tunnel of its kind Israel had discovered.

A military spokesman said it had been dug since the 2014 Gaza war, when Israel destroyed more than 30 tunnels, and stretched over "several kilometres" into Gaza and connected with other tunnels from which attacks could be launched.

Catalan’s protest in Barcelona

Thousands of Catalan’s have held a demonstration in Barcelona demanding the release of separatist leaders from detention.

Police reported more than 300,000 attended the protest, although organisers claimed about 750,000 people participated.

The protesters came together after nine separatist politicians and activists were detained for their role in October's referendum on independence from Spain, ruled illegal by the courts.

Poorer migrants will pay double for family visas

Poorer migrants families will have to pay significantly more to support their relative’s Australian visa applications from next year.

According to The Department of Social Services, a couple who intends to financially support a family to migrate to Australia needs to earn an accumulated of  $115, 475 per year. A single person is required to earn over $80,000.

A department spokesperson believes the increase income requirement will ensure the migrants have sufficient financial capacity to provide an adequate level of support during the assurance period
