Antibiotics consumption soars, fears superbugs will increase

The consumption of antibiotics increased by 65 percent from 2000 to 2015 according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

Authors of the study said “antibiotic resistance, driven by antibiotic consumption, is a growing global health threat” which could see the number of drug resistant infections increasing.

England to introduce bottle and can return deposit scheme

Customers in England will have to pay a deposit when they buy single use glass and plastic bottles and steel and aluminium cans.

The UK consumers use 13 billion plastic drink bottles a year with more than 3 billion not recycled and 15 million bottles dropped as litter or put in landfill every day.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove said "We need to see a change in attitudes and behaviour and the evidence shows that reward and return schemes are a powerful agent of change.”

Sex offenders could be identified in Victoria

Sex offender’s identities could be revealed under new reforms being considered by the Victorian Government against the state’s suppression order laws.

An independent review of Victoria's Open Courts Act recommended that courts should no longer hold suppression orders against the identity or whereabouts of sex offenders living in communities under supervision.

Australia’s alcohol, drugs problem revealed in AIHW report

Australia’s alcohol and drug problem has been revealed in a report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showing they are responsible for one in 20 deaths nationwide every year.

In an analysis of the Australian Burden of Disease Study, it was found that that alcohol and illicit drugs combined, were responsible for 6.7 percent of life lost from early death, as well as years of healthy life lost due to living with disease or injuries  

Prince of Wales to take Bundaberg Rum Tour

The Prince of Wales will tour the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and mingle with locals when he visits the city on April 6 as part of his regional QLD tour following his official duties at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

He will also meet with locals involved in disaster recovery in the Wide Bay region and conservationists securing the health and security of local Loggerhead Turtle populations, as well as the community event at the distillery, which has been dubbed the ‘Big Bundy BBQ.’

Palaszczuk’s snub at Games opening

The Commonwealth Games Federation has left Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk off the speaking schedule for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, leading to reports Ms Palaszczuk is outraged no Queensland representative will be part of the ceremony.

The Commonwealth Games Federation said “it is critical that these games remain unpoliticised.”
