BOM Warns of Wet and Wild Weather for QLD

The Bureau of Meteorology warns of more wet and wild weather for southern Queensland which is expected to last all week. 

Heavy rainfall of up to 200 millimetres is forecast throughout the whole week with today being the wettest day across parts of the south-east, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Agricultural communities are also being urged to stay on alert, as heavy rainfall could cause "significant" crop damage. 

Forecaster Jonathan How says the storms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

Police Seeking Missing Money in Fake Lawyer Case

Police are seeking missing money after a fake lawyer on the Gold Coast lost more than $430,000 of their clients money. 

Nerise Dawn Moore, who formerly operated a Mudgeeraba law firm known as Stenton and Moore, has been disqualified by the Queensland Supreme Court from managing a corporation that is a legal practice.

Since investigations began more than 40 clients have made claims for compensation.

 

First Nations Families Call For Resources To Find Missing Children

First Nations communities are asking for more resources to be put forward for investigations into missing Indigenous children. 

Families elated by the news of missing child Cleo Smith being found safe are asking for help finding their children amidst the mammoth effort to find the missing child. 

With 20 percent of missing children in Western Australia being Indigenous, families say they aren’t met with the same help when they approach authorities. 

Trials for Touchless Crossing Lights Underway

Trials for touchless crossing buttons in Melbourne's CBD have proved successful, sparking international interest. 

Melbourne businessman Con Liosatos saw the effects the pandemic had on the public and through his company, designed a crossing button that doesn't require any contact. 

The revolutionary device means instead of pressing a button, you wave your hand across the front, setting off the infrared sensor which activates the red light allowing you to cross. 

Peaceful Protests in Sudan Met With Tear Gas

Protests of the military coup in Sudan have been met with violence, as Sudanese police forces fired tear gas at protestors. 

Overnight demonstrators protesting the coup to overthrow the democratic transition by military forces have been arrested with teachers participating in the peaceful demonstrations arrested and detained. 

Mohamid al-Amin, a geography teacher who participated in the protests outside the Ministry of Education says “Police later came and fired tear gas at us though we were simply standing on the streets and carrying banners”

2032 Brisbane Olympics Set to Be Climate Positive

A contractual agreement is underway to ensure Brisbane's 2032 Olympics will be the first Games to operate in a way that is climate positive. 

The scheme is part of a bid to avoid huge debts and abandoned stadiums evident in some previous host cities.

Specific details of how Brisbane 2032 will achieve a climate positive games are yet to be laid out, but the International Olympic Committee has pledged to move towards a more flexible model that allows future Olympics to operate in a more affordable and sustainable way.

Border Forces Operation Targets Illegal Indonesian Fishing Boats

Authorities carried out an operation over the weekend that targeted the influx of illegal Indonesian fishing boats in Australia's northern waters. 

The Australian Border Force executed a three-day operation near the Rowley Shoals Marine Park off the northern Western Australian coast where they were able to seize hundreds of kilograms of fishing gear and seafood.

The actions come after local tour operators raised the alarm about dozens of foreign boats in the area, saying they feared piracy during recent trips. 

Potential Changes to Mask Mandate for South-East QLD

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has flagged potential changes to the mask mandate as Queensland edges closer to the 80 per cent single-dose COVID-19 vaccination milestone. 

Currently Residents living in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast regions are currently subject to the mask mandate.

Ms Palaszczuk says Queensland is set to hit 80 per cent of the eligible population aged over 16 years with the first dose of a vaccine by Tuesday. 

Booster Vaccine Program Begins Today

The COVID-19 booster vaccination program is set to begin today despite more than 100,000 Australians having already received their third jab. 

The booster vaccination program allows anyone over 18 years old who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at least six months ago to have a third shot. 

While today marks the formal beginning of the booster program, as of Saturday more than 173,000 boosters had already been administered.
