Brisbane Lord Mayor Calls For Ban of Swastikas Following Weekend Incident

A Nazi flag has been flown over a synagogue days before commemoration of Kristallnacht by Jewish community. 

A 45 year old man, residing in the UniLodge building has been charged with public nuisance and has been ordered to appear in court. 

Brisbane Lord mayor Adrian Scrinner echoed calls for a ban following the incident and called current laws “inadequate”, this follows the NSW Labor opposition drafting laws that would ban the use of swastikas under threat of six months’ jail in September.

 

Kulkalaig Woman Among Activist Voices At COP26

Due to COVID19 restrictions only a few young Australian climate activists will be at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

Among the few climate change activists Tishiko King, a Kulkalaig woman from Masig Island warns of the severe effects to First Nations communities especially the Torres Strait which has already been hit hard by rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss due to environmental changes in temperature as well as severe weather events. 

Morrison Calls For Action Against Trolls At G20 Summit

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is calling for action against online trolls in an effort to  toughen regulation on social media. 

Mr Morrison is urging countries including the United States and the UK to call on Facebook and other social media platforms to reveal the anonymous trolls who harass people online. 

Mr Morrison made a statement on Saturday to the G20 summit in Rome which proposes a new round of coordinated action to protect people online, with one option being to use expanded powers to identify people who hide behind anonymous accounts.

 

Fears Of Overshooting Climate Targets Despite Promises of Reduced Emissions

There are growing fears the world is set to overshoot climate targets despite promises to reduce emission targets from 120 countries. 

An annual UN Emissions Gap report shows the world is on track to hit 2.7 degrees Celsius of warming by the year 2100, with 2021 expecting to be a record-high year for global emissions as economies attempt to bounce back from COVID-19. 

QLD Records No New Cases After Weekend Vaccination Push, Concerns Over Complacency

The Queensland Deputy Premier has warned not to become complacent despite there being 5 days without a new COVID19 case. 

Deputy Premier Mark Bailey voiced his concerns about a drop in covid check in app usage among Queenslanders and warns of the need to continue covid safe practices with interstate travellers crossing the borders looming in the near future.

With another weekend push for vaccinations within Surf Lifesavers clubs around the state, more than 1000 vaccines have been administered with only 12 active quarantine cases.

 

QPS Show Up in Uniform Despite Requests Not To Do So

Queensland Police Service Officers showed up to Pride festivities in uniform despite Pride’s request for them not to do so. 

A number of QPS workers and Corrective Service officers showed up to march in uniform, despite requests from Pride and the wider community not to have the presence of police within the space due to concerns about safety. 

Vigil To Be Held Honoring Refugee and Release of Coronial Inquest Results

A Vigil is to be held for a refugee who died by suicide in an offshore detention on Nauru. 

Protestors will hold a vigil at 9:30am outside the Brisbane Magistrates Court to mark the 6 year anniversary and release of the results of the coronial inquest into the death of Omid Masoumali, an Iraninan man who sought refuge and was incarcerated in offshore detention centre on Nauru. 

Mr Masoumali died after setting himself on fire after asking for mental health care and not receiving any.

 

LNP MP Tim Smith Resigns After Drunk Driving Incident

Liberal MP Tim Smith has resigned after a drunk driving car collision. 

The Liberal MP for Kew has apologised for crashing his car while more than twice the legal blood-alcohol limit admitting to a quote “serious error of judgement”.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, whom Mr Smith says he tendered his resignation from,  says “I remain exceedingly angry and disappointed in Tim Smith's actions”.

 

Fundamental Details Excluded from Government Climate Change Plans

Despite a net zero proposal from the government, Energy Minister Angus Taylor refuses to provide crucial details about newly revealed climate change plans. 

Following Prime Minister Scott Morrisons’ unveiling of a new plan for net zero by 2050, critics have responded saying the budgeting only until 2030 falls far short of the necessary costs needed to reach net zero with Labor fiercely critical of the plan saying it fails to address current increases in short term emission reductions target.
