New claim offered for post-vaccination injury

From September 6, Australians who suffer injury and loss of income due to a COVID-19 vaccination will be able to register their intent to claim.

The scheme, administered by Services Australia, will cover the costs of injuries above $5000 due to a proven adverse reaction.

Health Minister Greg Hunt says the COVID-19 Vaccine Claim Scheme will offer protection to Australians receiving a TGA-approved vaccine, irrespective of where vaccination occurs.

Violence unfolds in Greece over anti-vaccine protest

An anti-vaccine protest in Greece turned violent, with police resorting to tear gas, stun grenades and water cannons to control the crowd.

In Athens, thousands of people are protesting the decision to make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for health workers and students.

Similar protests occurred last month, and also ended in violence.

Trucks block M1 in protest of border restrictions

Several trucks in protest of Covid-19 restrictions have blocked the M1 southbound on the Gold Coast, causing significant delays.

The protest, near exit 86 at Reedy Creek, comes after Queensland recently announced that essential workers, including truck drivers, would need to be vaccinated to cross the border.

Police have asked the trucks to move but they refused, so tow trucks are being called in.

Work begins on Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary expansion

Work has begun on a major $1.4m expansion of Brisbane’s Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.

This expansion, which will create new tourist attractions, has come as a part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

Before the pandemic, 70% of the sanctuary’s visitors were from overseas or interstate, and improving the visitor experience will help the sanctuary prepare for when the borders open again.

Older Australians expected to wait longer for vaccine choice

Older Australians might have to wait for months before they can get a choice of vaccines.

This comes despite the technical advisory group on immunisation (ATAGI) calling on the government to consider making mRNA vaccines, such as Pfizer, available to them.

The Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, says vaccine choice “would be considered once vaccine supplies are there," however, that was likely to be “at the very tail end of the vaccination program."

According to a major report released by financial research provider Rainmaker Information, the number of Australian superannuation funds is contracting at its fastest rate in a decade.

It is estimated that Australia’s 10 biggest superannuation funds will hold an estimated 80% of the market within four years, with a wave of mergers expected to dramatically affect competition.

Gaming site Twitch reports "hate raids"

Gamers are reporting increased “hate raids” with barrages of racist, sexist, antisemitic and homophobic abuse, which has been making life increasingly unpleasant for minority users on Twitch.

Raven, a Black 31-year-old who identifies as gender non-binary, started a Twitter hashtag, #TwitchDoBetter to fight back racial slurs and messages referring to the Ku Klux Klan.

The hashtag has garnered many complaints over the past month, largely from female, non-white and LGBTQI+ players.
