South China outbreak threatens global trade

In international news, a coronavirus outbreak in southern China’s manufacturing and export hub may have a ripple effect on global trade.

The government of the Guangdong province have imposed lockdowns to contain a rise in COVID-19 cases which may slow activity in the region’s container ports, causing delivery delays and product shortages in Europe, Australia, the United States and beyond.

Businesses have warned of disruptions until the end of the year and with countries starting to reopen businesses and trade, this crisis could derail economic recovery from the pandemic.

Woman airlifted to hospital after car falls 70m off cliff

A woman has been airlifted to a Brisbane hospital after falling seventy meters down a cliff in a car accident north west of the Gold coast yesterday morning. 

The woman reportedly sustained an arm injury, but miraculously appears to be in a stable condition. 

The woman is understood to have been driving on Tamborine Oxen-ford road at 7:30am before the car rolled. 

This is one of several accidents in the area yesterday morning when greater Brisbane was blanketed in fog.

Labor Leaders Dispute Schrinner's Budget

In response to the LNP administration's 2021-2022 budget released yesterday, Labor opposition leaders said, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has turned with his tail between his legs.   

Labor leader Jared Cassidy said “ratepayers are paying more and more and they’re getting less and less”. The budget has revealed an average rates rise of 3.75%, adding an additional $62 to an occupier's annual bill. 

Lord Mayor Schrinner said the political fallout has been worth it seeing as $6 million has been redirected into community groups and charities through grants.

 

Two New Local Cases in Sydney Suburbs

Two new locally acquired Covid-19 cases could lead to a new wave of restrictions for Sydney.

The cases include a man in his 60s and one of his household contacts both located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Authorities have not yet confirmed where the infection was contracted from but his work as a driver transporting international flight crew is a potential source. 

 

Teenage Boy Wakes From Coma

A teenage boy who was crushed by a whale while out fishing off the NSW coast has woken up after being comatosed for over a week.  

Eighteen year old Nick Myhill, and his thirty nine year old step father were on an early morning fishing trip off the coast of Narooma, when a whale breached from the water and landed on their small boat leaving the teenager with severe head and neck injuries. 

A go fund me page set up to support Nick and his family has raised over twenty two thousand dollars, with his family thanking everyone for their support.

 

Biden & Putin Meet at Geneva Summit

American President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladamir Putin will conclude the Geneva summit agreeing to reinstate their respective ambassadors and begin talks on arms control and cybersecurity.

After months of top-tier diplomatic contacts being effectively cut off amid escalating tensions, Biden revealed that an agreement has been reached to return ambassadors to their corresponding posts.
