Latest Coronavirus Victims Include NSW School Student and Infant in SA

A student at a New South Wales boys’ school and a baby in South Australia are also among the latest in the confirmed cases of Coronavirus.

Epping Boys High School in Sydney will remain closed today after a 16-year-old, year 11 student tested positive to the virus.

NSW Health has advised students and staff to self-isolate over the next few days whilst the contact tracing process is conducted.

The diagnosis has brought the national number of confirmed cases to 55.

Military Ceasefire Announced in Idlib Province

A military ceasefire was announced in the Syrian rebel stronghold of Idlib province after a summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin. 

 

The ceasefire is set to commence today at 12 AM Syrian time.

 

Idlib province has seen an increase in bloodshed since the beginning of a joint Russian and Syrian offensive into the region which saw Turkey mounting a counter-offensive to repel Syrian forces. 

 

Major Coral Bleaching Event Projected in the Great Barrier Reef

Doctor William Skirving from the United States National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Coral Reef Watch has projected a major coral bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef as a result of a spike in ocean warming. 

 

It has been emphasized that this event will likely be larger and more intense than previous bleaching events which troubled the reef in 2016 and 2017, and will affect southern parts of the reef which have previously escaped dramatic bleaching events.

Emergency Staff in Quarantine Over Coronavirus Exposure

15 emergency staff from Brisbane’s Mater Private Hospital will be quarantined for two weeks due to potential exposure to coronavirus. 

An 81-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were confirmed as the 12th and 13th cases of the virus in Queensland on Thursday afternoon. 

The man had recently returned from Thailand while the woman travelled from London to Brisbane with a stopover in Singapore. 

Queensland Health said they are working to locate those who came into contact with these two most recent cases.

 

New Wage Theft Legislation to Be Proposed Next Month

Queensland employers caught committing wage theft could face up to fourteen years in prison under laws to be proposed next month. 

 

A 2018 inquiry discovered almost one in four Queensland workers were not being paid their full wage.

 

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace says amendments will be made to the criminal code after years of union pressure on state and federal governments.

 

Wage theft includes not paying superannuation, withholding leave entitlements and short changing staff.
