A small aircraft crashed into a residence in a Southern California city, leaving one person dead.

Three people inside the home, including an infant, made it to safety, officials said.

"A single-engine Cirrus SR22 crashed under unknown circumstances into a house on West 115th Street in Upland," FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor confirmed. Upland is about 40 kilometres west of San Bernardino.

Rock art found in Cape York Wilderness

Deep in the Cape York wilderness, rock art believed to have been painted by some of the first people to arrive in Australia tens of thousands of years ago is waiting to be rediscovered.

A $1.34 million grant from the Australian Research Council will see an expert team of scientists spend the next five years reassessing the catalogued examples of what is known as Quinkan art.

They will also work with local communities to rediscover sites which have been lost to them through displacement by European settlement.

Around 1,000 people attended the event celebrating his career including former Prime Minister John Howard, Peter Dutton and Scott Morrison.

Mr Abbott told the crowd he felt his government had helped the country to be its best.

Extreme fire warnings issued for parts of Queensland

Extreme fire warnings have been issued for parts of Queensland as 28 blazes burn across the state and firefighters prepare for big winds to sweep through tinder dry areas.

The fire danger will peak in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt on Friday afternoon with temperatures across the southeast expected to soar toward 40C.

Forecasters say extreme warnings are in place from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast, inland to Toowoomba and then out towards Dalby, Miles and Goondiwindi.

Police say a gang of six people arrived at the 52-year-old’s home on Hargrave Street in the Moreton Bay suburb on 10pm Wednesday.

She has been taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and is in a stable condition.

A neighbour says, “Since I’ve been here, there have been three stabbings and two shootings in the area in the last few years.

China and US cancel tariffs imposed during trade war.

China and the US have agreed to cancel in phases the tariffs imposed during their months-long trade war, the Chinese commerce ministry says, without specifying a timetable.

An interim US-China trade deal is widely expected to include a US pledge to scrap tariffs scheduled for December 15 on about $US 156 billion worth of Chinese imports, including mobile phones, laptop computers and toys.

Ministry spokesman Gao Feng said that both must simultaneously cancel some tariffs on each other's goods to reach a "phase one" trade deal.

Disney princess groped by guest.

A Disney princess was left shaken after being groped by a male Disney World guest during a photo opportunity – as his wife sat nearby.

The disturbing incident occurred at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida last weekend.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Brian Sherman allegedly grew “excited” while posing for a picture with the actress, who was dressed as an unknown princess.

This weekend's weather forecast was a tale of two extremes, with the New South Wales alps expected to see temperatures drop as low as -6C as the other side of the country swelters through tops of 44C.

Queenslanders were warned to prepare for extreme fire danger as temperatures hit a scorching 37, with 50km/h winds also expected.

Meanwhile, clear skies over northwestern Australia are causing a build-up of heat in Western Australia's Pilbara and Kimberley districts - a regular occurrence at this time of the year.
