UN warns Venezuelan government not to use violence against protesters

UN's Secretary General has warned Venezuela's authorities not to use deadly force against demonstrators following the opposition leader Juan (WAN) Guaido’s calls for protests against President Nicolas Maduro.

Antonio Guterres spoke to Venezuela's Foreign Minister Jorge (YOR-GAY) Arreaza late Tuesday and UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said UN officials have had contacts with aides to Guaido.

UK Parliament becomes first in the world to declare climate emergency

The UK has become the first parliament in the world to declare a climate emergency.

British parliament voted for the declaration on Wednesday and hopes that it will encourage other governments around the world to follow in its footsteps.

Britain’s opposition labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he hopes the vote will increase pressure on the government to take action on climate change.

New report shows Aldi is driving down grocery prices Australia-wide

A new report shows that Aldi is saving Australian shoppers more than $2 million per year on groceries.

The German company has credited its success in Australia to driving down the prices of its products.

The report also showed that Aldi’s lower prices drove competitors to reduce their prices, saving $450 million for customers who shop elsewhere for their groceries.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said young voters are a ‘big problem’ in the upcoming federal election.

The comments follow new data released last week by the Australian Electoral Commission showing that 88.8 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds are enrolled to vote in the May 18 election.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the large number of first-time young voters is a big problem in the election because many are unaware of how privileged they are.

Federal Coalition pledges money for Rochedale roundabout and Coopers Plains level crossing

The Federal Coalition has pledged $14 million to upgrade a ‘notorious’ roundabout on Rochedale Road on Brisbane’s southside as part of a $226 million upgrade package rolling out in south-east Queensland to tackle congestion.

Federal Cities and Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge made the announcement yesterday, which will see a roundabout on the busy Rochedale Road and Priestdale Road intersection upgraded in a busy area with five schools and a childcare nearby.

Phones and smart devices could replace Go Card soon

Queensland’s Transport Minister Mark Bailey has confirmed that the public testing for Queenslanders to ride public transport without having to touch on and off with a Go Card is weeks away.

In its place, "smart ticketing" will see passengers use their credit card, mobile phone or smartwatch to catch public transport.

Tests will most likely begin in the second half of 2019, following the Queensland government’s allocation of $371 million in last year’s budget for smart ticketing.

New Thai Queen announced

Three days ahead of Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn's coronation, the new Thai queen has been announced.

Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayutthaya was announced as the new queen in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday which was the first time the couple’s relationship had been made public.

Suthida is the King’s fourth wife, but the announcement did not specify the date of the couple’s marriage.

Barr defends his decision to clear Trump in Mueller report

Congress has interrogated US Attorney General William Barr amid claims he misrepresented the findings of the Mueller report.

Barr defended his handling of the report that looked into the possible Russian interference in the 2016 election on Wednesday after Robert Mueller had questioned his decision to declare no wrongdoing by President Donald Trump.

The Democrats  also debated whether Trump should be impeached for obstruction of justice based on the evidence presented in Mueller’s 448-page report.
