We have seen bushfire season begin much earlier this year and the fires have been more intense and frequent than expected. The NSW Rural Fire Service has  declared  the earliest fire danger period on record and crews in NSW and QLD have been battling fires already. 4ZZZ Reporter Jack McDonnell spoke with Greg Mullins, a Climate Councillor and former New South Wales Fire and Rescue Commissioner about the upcoming bush fire season. Greg has over 50 years experience studying bushfires and even now is a volunteer firefighter.

Flood Survivors face great struggle to rebuild lives

Citizens of the Indian state of Kerala are expected to face great hardship in the face of receding high waters following mass flooding.

 

Torrential Monsoon rains from the start of May have claimed 380 lives so far and dozens still remain missing.

 

Officials say the floods have caused 3 Billion Dollars worth of damage and Medical staff and NGO’s say the flooding has brought an increased chance of waterborne disease

 

Senior Ministers no Longer Backing Turnbull

Senior Ministers Mathias Cormann, Michaelia Cash and Mitch Fifield have revoked their support for Malcolm Turnbull, saying that the PM no longer holds the majority of support within the Liberal Government.

 

The three held a press conference this morning, saying that Turnbull needs to call a leadership meeting “swiftly”, and that this decision almost certainly paves the way for a leadership change.

 

The ministers have all handed in their resignations from the front bench.

Qantas Profits Fly High

Qantas has recorded a 15% increase in annual profit as a result of strong travelling demand and easing of capacity wars, which had previously dented domestic flight profit margins.

 

Qantas made a full-year net profit after tax of $980 million, compared to $852 million the year prior. Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce says this record result comes despite higher oil prices.

 

Seaweed: The New Superfood

Seaweed is being heralded as the next big superfood, and it’s one that Australia can produce cheaply and efficiently.

 

University of Sunshine Coast researchers say that seaweed has major health benefits, containing lots of important minerals and improving gut flora.

 

It is also incredibly environmentally friendly to produce, as it strips algae blooms from water as it grows, and researchers are hoping to drive the creation of a new seaweed industry in Australia.

Biggest Ekka Crowds in Years

This year’s Ekka saw its biggest crowds since 2011, capping out at 415,000 happy showgoers.

 

The attendees ate a total of 220,000 Dagwood Dogs, and 180,000 strawberry sundaes.

 

Show organisers said the slow flu season and sunny weather contributed to the year’s record breaking attendance.
