Indigenous Inmates Feared for their Lives

Inmates who escaped Greenough prison last month reportedly feared for their lives during their arrest.

The Geraldton Aboriginal Legal Services who helped the inmates hand themselves over say that both escapees feared they would be shot or brutalised, due to previous violence against aboriginal prisoners.

Managing lawyer Kate Turtley-Chappel says “our client’s lived experience is one of police brutality, it’s one of mistrust, misrepresentation, and that’s a scary place to come from.”

 

Worsening Drought Conditions

Evaporation levels across Australia are at a record high right now, increasing the struggles of drought-stricken farmers, as well as pushing up the bushfire risk.

Lack of rainfall has taken centre stage lately, but high winds, sunny days and low humidity have contributed to extra dryness, according to the bureau of meteorology.

Nationwide, last month’s evaporation total averaged over 145mm, well above the typical 128mm for July.

 

Revenge Porn No More

Queensland is looking to toughen laws on revenge porn statewide, and perpetrators could now be facing up to three years behind bars.

Distributing or even threatening to spread compromising images of another person could land you in jail under the proposed laws.

Attorney general Yvette D’ath said that revenge porn is a weapon that can be used to hurt, humiliate, coerce and intimidate a victim.

 

Perth Musos Banned from Queensland Radio

A Local Queensland radio station has made the decision to ban all Perth music artists from its broadcasts in support of the Super Netball Grand Finals team the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

The Station Hot91 Sunshine Coast FM has banned artists such as INXS, Baby Animals, Birds of Tokyo and Eskimo Joe in order to show support for the team’s radio partner.

This decision has been met with some criticism on twitter as West Coast Fever player Nat Medhurst responded with disapproval towards the ban.

False Rumours Fuelled False Deaths in India

Five men in Maharashtra’s (Duewell) Dhule India have been killed by a mob of villagers after false rumours were spread about them on social messaging app WhatsApp.

 

The men were wrongly suspected of abducting a girl they had been talking to, with the police later confirming the accusations as false.

 

There have been dozens of deaths in India, fuelled by fake news on WhatsApp.

Rohingya Children Orphaned

New research indicates that a majority of the Rohingya children in Bangladesh refugee camps have been orphaned, not just separated from their families as previously thought.

Humanitarian aid organisation Save the Children found in a survey that more than half the refugee children lost their parents in Myanmar’s violent military purges.

 

There are over 6000 orphaned and unaccompanied Rohingya children living in Bangladeshi refugee camps.

Floor Price on Alcohol introduced in the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory has become the first Australian Jurisdiction to place a Floor Price on alcohol in an Attempt to curb the states level of alcohol-related harm.

 

Attorney- General Natasha Fyles says the new laws are set to target the cheaper forms of alcohol for sale by charging a $1.30 per standard drink under the new laws in order to tackle the states alcohol-related crime and anti-social behavior.

 

Dutton Still Fighting for Leadership Position

 

MPs have launched another strike against prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, in the hopes of forcing a leadership vote today.

 

This comes after a tumultuous week in parliament for Turnbull and his challenger Peter Dutton, who is under investigation as new information reveals he may not legally be allowed to sit as PM under section 44.

 

Dutton still hopes that he will receive a majority vote if a leadership spill takes place.

Queensland Theatre Company Reveals Stellar Season

 

Queensland Theatre Company has unveiled a record-setting 2019 season for their 50th anniversary.

 

QTC is the fastest growing theatre company in Australia, and artistic director Sam Strong says that the season will feature a record 5 world premieres, including shows Hydra, City of Gold and (lapartemon)

Their 50th year will be rounded off with an all-star cast performance of Death of a Salesman.
