Stormzy offers uni scholarship

Following a Cambridge University announcement that no black students were accepted into the college from 2012 to 2016, British ‘grime’ artist Stormzy is offering scholarships for young black students.

Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Owuo, said the scholarship is intended to ensure that people with the academic ability aren’t held back from achievements due to discrimination.

Cricket Australia employee appeals sacking over abortion comments

An ex-Cricket Australia employee will argue she was sacked for her political opinion at the Fair Work Commission today.  

Angela Williamson was dismissed in March after criticising the Tasmanian government’s opposition to abortion.

Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman denies his government called for Ms Williamson to be sacked.

Wheat genome finally cracked

Australian scientists have helped to crack the wheat genome - a code nearly 5 times more complex than the human genome.

The development could lead to an improvement in the growth and quality of wheat globally.

Sequencing the wheat genome has been a longstanding goal for scientists, as half of the world’s population rely on the crop.

 

Katter Party stands by Anning speech

The state branch of Katter's Australian Party is defending their Queensland Senator Fraser Anning maiden speech despite widespread condemnation.

QLD Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk said Anning’s support for the White Australia Policy and comments on Muslim Immigration, expressed in his speech on Tuesday, were revolting.

Mr Katter says he is sorry some Muslims in his electorate feel betrayed but he is refusing to take back his remarks on Muslim immigration.

Landmark Case for Casual Workers

A landmark court ruling has awarded a Queensland casual worker annual leave, with unions welcoming the decision and calling for a clearer definition of casual employment.

Under the Fair Work Act, casual workers are not entitled to the annual leave permanent employees enjoy.

The Rio Tinto truck driver was awarded the holiday pay after the Federal Court found he was not a casual employee due to his regular working hours.

Aretha Franklin passes away

The Queen of soul, Aretha Fanklin has died overnight at the age of 76 at her home in Detroit.

Her death was due to a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

During her career, she was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and earned 18 Grammy Awards.

Kangaroos suffering in NSW drought

New South Wales rehabilitation officials are releasing kangaroos in secret locations to avoid being killed by drought-stricken farmers. 

Competition between native and farm animals for feed has led to an increase in kangaroos being shot or run over.

As drought conditions worsen, the kangaroo population in New South Wales continues to dwindle.

Turnbull facing mutiny over NEG

The Prime Minister could see up to ten of his own MPs vote against the Government over the National Energy Guarantee.

Malcolm Turnbull is facing rivalry from former PM Tony Abbott, who is concerned the energy policy won’t do enough to lower power prices.

Abbott is also voicing his concerns Australia is being dictated by the Paris Agreement.
