Great Barrier Reef Foundation spent $800 000 of grant on ‘project management’ since June
The Great Barrier Reef Foundation has spent $800 000 on ‘project management’ since it received a $440 million grant from former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in June.
The foundation plans to spend a further $7.3 million on administration and $25 million on projects for the rest of the financial year, despite only employing 6 full time staff members when it received the grant.
The spending was uncovered during the Senate inquiry set up to look into how the grant was awarded and what the foundation plans to do with the money.
Aboriginal man Daniel Love facing deportation to PNG
Lawyers have accused the Federal Government of locking up an Aboriginal man in immigration detention and preparing to deport him to Papua New Guinea.
Daniel Love is a 39-year old father-of-five who has Aboriginal parents from Papua New Guinea, and has lived in Australia since he was five.
The Government wants to deport him to PNG but his family says he should not be treated like a foreign citizen.
Lawyers will take his case to the High Court, arguing it is a constitutional issue.
Man hospitalised after near-drowning incident at Green Island
A man is in a critical condition after he was pulled unconscious from water at Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef.
Paramedics performed CPR on the man on Green Island and he was flown to Cairns Hospital for further treatment.
A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service says it is unclear whether the incident was a near drowning or a medical incident.
Brisbane councillors set to retire at next election
Two of Brisbane’s longest-serving councillors are set to retire at the next Brisbane City Council election.
Ian McKenzie for Coorparoo and Norm Wyndham for McDowall are expected to retire from their positions before the 2020 election.
Councillor McKenzie has discussed his plan to retire within the LNP, and says he will make an announcement when he has made a decision on when to retire.
