Gold Coast $2.1 million lights could be scrapped

Unimpressed doesn’t begin to describe how locals feel about the Gold Coast welcome sign. Described as a “monstrosity”, the mass of bright lights and yellow poles that sit between Brisbane and the Gold Coast could be scrapped.

The purpose of the lights was to spell the words ‘welcome’ to visitors and newcomers, and a ‘welcome home’ for residents ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Ratepayers have suggested the $2.1 million could have been better spent on hospitals, schools and roads.

Strawberry needle scare continues with copycat

There have been nine confirmed cases of strawberries containing needles within them, with one consumer being hospitalised.

Consumers have reported close shaves with their children and a copycat case has surfaced in another Queensland store.

Dr Kim Phan, a lecturer in food science and the University of Sydney, said the industry was not prepared for this kind of intentional contamination.

Charles Darwin University accused of altering academic work

Charles Darwin University has been accused of asking academics to change the wording of a study.

The study looked at the boom and bust nature of construction projects in Darwin - and was published only months after the North Australian Centre for Oil and Gas opened at CDU.  

University officials asked Dr Andrew Taylor to change the language in the publication after they deemed the report too critical of the gas company which had recently helped to fund the multi-million-dollar training centre on campus.

Croatian police accused of Refugee abuse

Refugees stranded in Bosnia allege Croatian police brutality. The allegations include beatings, unwarranted strip-searches and theft.

The abuse takes place as refugees attempt  to enter Europe via Croatia - A country that heavily patrols its borders and turns back refugees. Some refugees are reported to have tried to cross into Croatia 20 times.

YouTube stunt leaves 11-year old injured

An 11-year old boy has been left with horrific injuries after recreating a stunt found on YouTube, in a local park in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. 

The stunt known as the ‘Roundabout of Death’ led Tyler being rushed to the hospital with injuries so severe that doctors said they were usually only seen in fighter pilots suffering the effects of g-force.

Typhoon Mangkhut hits China

Typhoon Mangkhut has entered through southern China on Sunday, after lashing the northern Phillipines, leaving 64 dead and dozens buried in a landslide. More than 2.4 million have been evacuated from Guangdong fearing the typhoon.  

The city of Macau have closed casinos for the first time, and Hong Kong media suggesting Typhoon Mangkhut was expected to bare the most damage in decades.

Future of music festival questionable after deaths

New South Wales Premier has committed to close Sydney music festival ‘Defqon 1’  after two people have died and another 2 currently fighting for their lives after multiple drug overdoses.

Over 700 festival-goers were treated, with 18 hospitalised due to drug use.

The Premier made a statement announcing she “never wants to see this festival in New South Wales ever again”.
