Qantas Profits Fly High
Qantas has recorded a 15% increase in annual profit as a result of strong travelling demand and easing of capacity wars, which had previously dented domestic flight profit margins.
Qantas made a full-year net profit after tax of $980 million, compared to $852 million the year prior. Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce says this record result comes despite higher oil prices.

University of Sunshine Coast researchers say that seaweed has major health benefits, containing lots of important minerals and improving gut flora.
It is also incredibly environmentally friendly to produce, as it strips algae blooms from water as it grows, and researchers are hoping to drive the creation of a new seaweed industry in Australia.
Biggest Ekka Crowds in Years
This year’s Ekka saw its biggest crowds since 2011, capping out at 415,000 happy showgoers.
The attendees ate a total of 220,000 Dagwood Dogs, and 180,000 strawberry sundaes.
Show organisers said the slow flu season and sunny weather contributed to the year’s record breaking attendance.

Hawaii is bracing for hurricane lane, as the category 4 storm approaches the island.
The navy has left the harbour, and schools have been closed as everyone bunkers down in preparation for the storm.
Hawaii’s residents, still reeling from volcanic eruptions earlier in the year, are preparing for the storm to hit over the next three to four days.

A Harvard professor has called coconut oil ‘pure poison’ at a lecture held at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Karin Michaels delivered the speech, saying coconut oil is one of the worst foods you can eat because it is made mostly of saturated fatty acid, which poses a greater risk than straight lard.
QLD Abortion Law Fact Checker
Along with its new abortion laws, the Queensland Government is introducing an online fact checking tool to keep the public up to date on the new legislation.
On Wednesday Labor introduced a bill, hoping to decriminalise abortion for the first time since 1899.
The changes would make abortion a health issue, rather than a criminal one, and women would be able to terminate pregnancies up to 22 weeks.
This controversial issue has seen huge pushback from religious and pro-life groups.

New Reputation for Ipswich
Newly announced Ipswich City Council Administrator, Greg Chemello wants to focus on repairing the city’s damaged reputation.
The council was previously dissolved by the state government, who passed new laws sacking officials, including Paul Pisasale and Andrew Antoniolli.
Mr Chemello described the appointment as “a great challenge”.
Koala Interrupts Cop’s Morning Commute
A Queensland Police Officer had his morning commute interrupted by an adorable roadblock on Monday morning.
A koala was sitting in the middle of the road, and didn’t budge even when the officer flashed his lights at the little creature.
When the officer approached the koala, he scampered off to safety in the bush.
