Guatemalan farmers struggle to recover from June’s volcanic eruption.

Ash has damaged trees, killed crops and layered the fields with rock and debris. Destroyed corn and bean crops will force local farmers to buy these staple foods, but without crops to sell, they will need to rely upon government help.

The eruption of Fuego was the biggest in more than four decades and was declared a natural disaster.

Voluntary Euthanasia Inquiry Ordered in Queensland

Queensland Premier Palaszczuk has ordered an inquiry into voluntary euthanasia and end-of-life care.

 

Speaking at the Labor Party Conference in Brisbane, she outlined that a parliamentary health committee would look into improvements into these issues, along with aged care services and palliative care.

 

The state opposition outlined that assisted dying should not be a main issue for Queensland, expressing the Liberal National Party’s official stance against euthanasia.

Survey Finds Half of Women Experience Anxiety or Depression

A new study reveals almost half of Australian women suffer from anxiety or depression.  

The national survey of more than 15,000 women across Australia, conducted by non-for-profit organisation Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, also found that many women don’t feel comfortable discussing issue with doctors, and one in four women said they couldn’t afford to go to their preferred GP.

A key motive of the survey is to increase trust between women and their doctors.

'No Gatton's Women Prison' Group cause protests

A group of four people have blocked Millers Road leading from Southern Queensland Correctional Centre, stopping the transfer of prisoners from the facility.

The newly formed group, No Gatton Women’s prison, is calling on the Queensland Government to stop transferring women to the 300 cell facility and to rethink the need for another women’s prison.

Brisbane Rally Against Abortion Decriminalisation

Thousands of people marched through Brisbane’s CBD on saturday in protest of the Queensland government’s plan to decriminalise abortion.

Around 2500 protesters briefly shut down George Street as they marched on state parliament.

Under the proposed changes, abortion would be legal up to 22 weeks, while abortions after that could be approved under certain conditions with the approval of two separate doctors.

Chealsea Manning Autralian Tour looking for discretion in visa processing

Whistleblower Chelsea Manning’s upcoming Australian tour are asking key government figures for discretion in regards to visa processing when entering the country, after it was revealed that it was threatened to deny her a visa. This is based on section 501 of the Migration Act, which underlines that a minister may refuse a visa on ‘character grounds’.

Australian Universities to benefit from Australia Free Trade Agreement

August 31 has seen negotiations secured in a new free-trade agreement between Australia and Indonesia’s economy.

 

The negotiations are seeing new changes for both countries, with specific agreements within higher education.

 

The negotiations will see Australian Universities able to create new campuses within Indonesia.

As education is Australia’s third largest export, cooperation between education and national relations is essential.
