Queen Street Mall newsstand removed after 35 years

The owners of the iconic Queen Street Mall newsstand have been evicted after operating there for over 35 years.

The owner, Ross Peterson, says he is devastated that the council confirmed in writing he would be forced to leave on the 31st of May.

The council met with Mr Peterson to confirm it’s development plan for the area which includes demolishing the newsagency.

Diplomatic tensions intensify between Australia and South Africa

Diplomatic tensions have been intensified as Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton claimed Australia’s stance on white farmers in South Africa was misrepresented.

Following last months visa debacle, Julie Bishop sent a letter to South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu to clarify Australia’s humanitarian visa program is non-discriminatory.

Mr Dutton said this letter may have been misinterpreted by South African Ministers and suggested Ms Sisulu may have made a statement to appease domestic political audiences.

Alleged inappropriate sexual behaviour at Commonwealth Games to be investigated

Investigations are being conducted into the alleged assault of an athlete of a team visiting the Commonwealth Games.

It was reported the chief of mission for Mauritius has been accused of inappropriate sexual behaviour.

The Queensland Police says “our focus is always on the complainant in these issues, and if a person was to come forward making allegations of a sexual assault obviously the QPS would support that person and consider the information that they provided.”

Microfactory transforms electronic waste to micromaterials

A world-first microfactory which transforms electronic waste from smartphones and laptops into valuable materials is being launched in Sydney today.

The microfactory has the potential to reduce the problem of electronic waste ending up in landfill.

The materials can be recycled into micromaterials like ceramics and plastic filaments for 3D printing.

Shooter in YouTube space in San Bruno

Policing are responding to a shooting at the YouTube space in San Bruno.

Some employees were able to escape the building and an unknown number of victims have been taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Twitter was used to by trapped YouTube employees to communicate with authorities, one staffer Tweeted, “First thought it was earthquake … [then] I looked down and saw blood drips on the floor and stairs.”

It has been reported by police the shooter was female and is now dead.

April fools prank backfires for French mayor

A french mayor has apologised for her April fools joke claiming Ikea was coming to town and bringing over 4,000 new jobs.

The town of 54,000 were not happy with the mayor taking to social media to express their anger towards the joke.

The mayor told French media she was sorry that “the sense of humour was not shared by everyone”.

 

Sydney Harbour Bridge closed due to unauthorised climber

An unauthorised climber on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has forced police to shut numerous lanes on the bridge, causing severe traffic delays in both directions.

A police spokeswoman says multiple reports were received around 4:30am this morning and negotiations with the man are ongoing.

The Traffic Management Centre have warned motorists saying, “It doesn’t look like it’s going to have a quick resolution … it’s basically going to throw peak into chaos for anyone coming into the Sydney CBD.”

 

Tropical Cyclone Iris set to hit Whitsundays

Residents along the Queensland coastline are being warned of wild weather following Tropical Cyclone Iris.

The Whitsundays is most at risk, with the cyclone sitting around the region for the next couple of days until it eventually goes out to sea.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says “no matter what community gets impacted, we are all here to help.”

 

Big Pharma companies advertising stronger painkillers than codeine

Drug companies are being investigated after allegedly using the codeine crackdown as an opportunity to sell stronger painkillers to doctors.

The companies are sending targeted advertising to doctors for stronger pain medication in an effort to encourage them to sell their products.

The suggested new medications are twice as strong as the codeine painkiller Pandaeine Forte.
