NSW blown away by new wind farm

Australia is making moves to meet renewable energy targets as a new wind farm has been approved in New South Wales.

The $640 million project is one of the biggest in the country and will power 500 000 homes, assisting to reach federal renewable energy targets by 2020.

Nationals MP, Kevin Humphries says more significant wind and solar projects may eventuate from the approval of the program.

French railway workers on strike

French railway workers are striking against President Emmanuel Macron’s labour reforms in a display which will continue for the next three months and cause major delays for domestic and international services.

The union protesters say they are defending rail workers as well as the French public service against government law changes that will remove contracted employee benefits.

Thailand bust $22 million USD worth of crystal

Thailand has made one of its largest crystal methamphetamine busts, seizing more than $22 million US dollars worth of the drug.

The drugs were destined for Malaysia and were intercepted in the Chumpon Province.

The drugs were produced in the Golden Triangle region where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Two Thais and two Malaysians were arrested in connection with the bust.

Red Lea Chickens employees jobs terminated

More than 500 Red Lea Chickens employees have had their jobs terminated following the collapse of the chicken specialty chain.

Workers from the Blacktown processing plant and Sydney retail stores were told their jobs no longer existed in an email sent to them over Easter and now face a wait for money owed.

This comes as administrators of Red Lea chickens have admitted that business investors withdrew funding and have since launched an investigation into the company's affairs and the reasons for its financial failure.

 

Woolworths to ban single-use plastic bags

Woolworths is banning single-use plastic bags from June 20, forcing customers to buy reusable or canvas bags if they forget to bring their own.

More than 800 shops across Australia are making the switch, including Woolworths' supermarkets, BWS liquor stores, Metro Stores and petrol stations.

The switch comes just 10 days before the July 1 deadline implemented by National Retailers Association QLD.

Prince Charles and Camilla meet and greet at Old Government House

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will be arriving at Old Government House at 12.50 today, with city workers encouraged to greet them.

There will be restricted pedestrian and vehicle access during the day around Alice Street, Parliament House and QUT, including Gardens Point Road, and Kangaroo Point.

The royal couple are set to attend the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony tomorrow night.

Channel nine Commonwealth games coverage suspended

Channel Nine has had their media coverage of the Gold Coast commonwealth games suspended following a breach of strict broadcast conditions.

The network broadcast early video footage sunday night of a rehearsal for the opening ceremony in what organisers have determined to be a breach of news access rules.

Channels Nines suspended media coverage of the games will reviewed on the first day of competition.
