Millions set aside to compensate classroom surge

$250 million will be will be spent over the next two years to build more space in 60 schools by 2020.

 

The high school population which grows around 1,000 students per year, will jump to 17,000 students per year, with 57 schools being identified as being in critical need of funding.

 

The $250 million building boost in the state budget is on top of $20 million already spent on 10 schools to prepare them for 2020.

QFES personnel recognised in 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours

Six Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel have been recognised in part of the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours for their dedication to community safety.

 

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the awards were a testament to the outstanding commitment and service shown to Queenslanders.

 

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said it’s a privilege to see the recipients recognised and celebrated for their professionalism, dedication and commitment.

Queensland town turned Hollywood movie set

The regional Queensland town of Wooroolin has become the set of a Hollywood movie.

 

Vietnam War film, Danger Close: the battle of Long Tan, will tell the story of Australian diggers in the wars most well-known battle.

 

The film stars Vikings actor Travis Fimmel, and has made downtown Wooroolin extremely active with people walking into the town hall in costume.

UNSW professor wins global energy prize

A Sydney professor has become the first Australian to win a global energy prize worth $820,000.

 

Martin Green from the University of New South Wales was one of two people to share this year's prize, for his outstanding achievements in research and technology addressing energy challenges.

 

Professor Green won the award for his work in the field of photovoltaics, the shortlist for the award included Tesla’s Elon Musk and battery technology Khalil Amine.

US and Canada spat escalates during G7 summit

A spat between US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has caused rising tensions during the G7 summit.

Trudeau said Canada will retaliate against U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs, prompting a comment from Trump calling Trudeau ‘dishonest & weak’.

 

Other G7 nations such as France and Germany have criticized Trump for destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

Iraq election ballot warehouse catches fire ahead of recount

A Baghdad warehouse holding ballots for Iraq’s parliamentary election has caught fire days after parliament calls for a nationwide recount of votes.

 

An interior ministry spokesman says most of the important boxes were in three other warehouses where the fire was controlled.

 

Iraqi parliament speaker Salim al-Jabouri says the fire is intentional and elections should be repeated.

Animal collisions increase on Queensland roads

Insurance claims from collisions with animals have risen 25% according to NRMA.

 

NRMA says winter months have the highest risk for motorists, with collisions with Kangaroos the highest, followed by dogs, wombats, cattle and cats.

 

Saint George, Warwick, Cunnamulla and Stanthorpe have reported the highest number of collisions across the state.
