Lebanese Australians Enroll in Upcoming Lebanese Election

Lebanese Australians are registering to vote in the upcoming Lebanese election in an attempt to protect the civil rights of those living in Lebanon

Lebanese Australian Sari Haddad says he is trying to mobilise the Lebanese Australian community to involve themselves in the election in 2022.

Mr Haddad says he feels a social responsibility to veer away from the major political parties that have been in power for decades.

Huge Gap in Work Supply for Prostate Cancer Care Gold Coast Nurses Say

Gold Coast nurses say there is a huge gap in worker supply for caring for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Currently, there are only two specialist nurses caring for those diagnosed with prostate cancer in the region. 

Specialist prostate cancer nurse Roanee KC says there is a great need for an increase in specialist nurses in the area with 500 people diagnosed with prostate cancer a year on the Gold Coast.

Cotton Australia Tries to Reduce Textile Waste

Cotton Australia is implementing trials to see if old cotton textiles could improve the soil on cotton farms. 

As a part of this trial, Goondiwindi farmers Sam and Harry Coulton have spread two tonnes of shredded cotton on a paddock on their farm in Southern Queensland.

This is part of a scheme by Cotton Australia to reduce textile waste in Australia.

 

Farmers of Lachlan Valley Face Flood Damage Costs

Farmers of the Lachlan Valley say costs of recovery from recent floods could reach tens of millions of dollars. 

The flooding of the Lachlan river peaked yesterday morning at over ten metres which is just below the 2016 flood record.

The New South Wales Government announced earlier this week that it is starting the process of making Forbes a natural disaster zone.

 

Victorian Cricket Team Self Isolates

A cricket match between New South Wales and Victoria has been postponed this morning due to a possible COVID-19 case.

The Sheffield Shield match was scheduled for 10am this morning but has been postponed after Victorian bowler Will Sutherland returned a test result that requires further analysis.

The Victorian team is self isolating whilst further investigations take place

Doctors Without Borders Respond to Distress Call of Libyan Coast

10 people were found dead at the bottom of a refugee boat, along with 99 survivors rescued from Libyan waters late on Wednesday.

Doctors Without Borders reported a rescue ship found the wooden boat after responding to a distress call off the Libyan Coast.

The team aboard the ship carried out three similar rescues in the previous 24 hours, with a total of 186 survivors on board. 

More than fifty nine thousand asylum seekers have reached neighbouring Italian shores this year, fleeing human rights abuses in Libya, Iraq and Syria.

Blockaders Protect Cherry Tree Corridor

Blockaders are setting up camp near the Cherry Tree State Forest in attempts to stop logging that is reported to be in breach of logging rules.

In a media release, North East Forest Alliance or NEFA say the Cherry Tree corridor is an essential piece of forest on the Border Ranges National Park as it is home to endangered species such Black Striped Wallabies and Koalas.

NEFA is calling for the logging to be stopped and protesters are calling for support to blockade the area.
