Dreamworld owners sue engineer over 2016 tragedy
The legal battle rages on over the 2016 Dreamworld Thunder River Rapids ride tragedy as the theme park owners are suing an engineer who allegedly deemed the ride safe, a day before malfunctioning. The owners are seeking damages for breach of contract and negligence.
The engineer is defending the claims, stating the owners failed to meet obligations under the Workplace Health and Authority.
The matter will appear in the Supreme Court.
Housing Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 passes
The Housing Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 passed in Queensland parliament providing additional rights to tenants, ending leases, preventing evictions without grounds and allowing pets within rental properties.
The new rules are designed to protect renters experiencing domestic and family violence in addition to meeting the minimum quality standards.
The Real Estate Institute of Queensland have criticised the new laws believing they enforce arduous requirements for property owners' rights and swing the balance in favour of tenants.
School Strike for Climate goes ahead
It’s been a big week for climate activism, as Brisbane’s School Strike for Climate forged ahead today despite predicted storms.
The Strike demands no new coal, gas and oil investments, net zero emissions by 2030, 100 per cent renewable exports by 2030, and funding for workers in the transition away from the fossil-fuel industries.
It’s the second major climate action for Brisbane this week, after Extinction Rebellion protesters scaled parliament house on Wednesday.
Arnhem Space Centre set for mid 2022 launch
A milestone is in the horizon as Northern Territory’s Arnhem Space Centre is set for a mid 2022 launch.
This historical NASA project is special as it will be the first time the American space organisation will send a commercial launchpad outside U.S soil.
NASA scientists have been working with Gumatj locals in north east Arnhem land to build the centre as they prepare for future launches. Up to 40 Gumatj workers will be employed by NASA for ongoing employment.
LinkedIn shut down in China
Deeming the operating environment ‘significantly challenging’, Microsoft pulled the plug on its LinkedIn service in China. The American tech giant chose to shut down operations after several months of issues relating to data collection problems and censorship over users' posts.
China’s internet watchdog, in May, reported LinkedIn for engaging in improper collection and use of data and requested them to rectify the problem.
Argentine government holts price increase on food
Argentina’s government has struck a deal to temporarily pause increases in the price of its food.
Food and consumer goods prices have risen by 50 per cent annually, as the country emerges from a deep economic recession.
The concern is, the rising prices are preventing workers from purchasing food and other essential goods, as the price increases outstrip wage growth.

QLD Ambulance Service documents leaked
Briefing documents from the Queensland Ambulance Service revealed the organisation has “insufficient resources to manage the workload”.
The documents cover a period of 11 days between April to May 2021, with reports of patients in South-East Queensland being forced to wait hours for an ambulance.
A QAS spokesman has responded to the documents saying the paramedic roster has changed since the 11 day period with a twilight shift introduced to cover the 12 hours to 4am, as well as mentioning ambulances are sent out based in the severity of the situation.
BOM warns of severe SEQ thunderstorms
The latest report from the Bureau of Meteorology warns of severe thunderstorm warnings for residents across South East Queensland, with the wild weather expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rain and large hail.
The BOM says a low pressure system is pushing several storm fronts east across Queensland towards Moreton Bay.
