After news of his resignation from the Liberal National Party, Campbell Newman is widely expected to bid for the federal senate on a minor party ticket. Mr Newman had blasted his former party on social media for abandoning core values yesterday.

 

Ipswich ghost town revitalisation

The decade-long on and off development plans for Ipswich CBD have now finally progressed, changing the former ’ghost town’ into a $250 million redevelopment project. 

Tenants and locals have had their confidence boosted due to a recently constructed administration building which has greatly increased CBD activity. 

The Nicholas Street redevelopment will feature new retail spaces, dining precinct, water features, two libraries, a civic plaza, cinema and go karting track.

 

NSW elections postponed again

NSW local government elections will be postponed for a second time due to pandemic restrictions, with local Government Minister Shelley Hancock issuing a directive last Saturday that will reschedule this year’s council elections until December 4th.

Judge refuses suppression order

A Federal Court judge has denied the request of the Northern Territory government to have the financial settlement amount from its 2016 class-action lawsuit disclosed from the public. 

The Northern Territory government sought a media suppression order on the settlement figure for the abuse of a number of young offenders at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, but Federal Court Justice Debra Mortimer ordered that it be made public on Monday

US withdraws from Iraq this year

After 20 years of US military presence in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden has announced that the US military's combat mission in Iraq will end this year. 


Following a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Biden says that the plan to withdraw two thousand five hundred American soldiers from the war torn region has begun, and a formal closure of operations in Afghanistan will continue until the end of the year.

Wellness app connects NDIS participants and support workers

The Kynd app developed at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast is helping NDIS participants and their families to connect based on shared interests and desired skills.

Michael Metcalfe co-designed the app with NDIS participants and support workers which now has more than 1,000 Gold Coast users.

The App users can look at profiles and see the verification a different support person has, learn about hobbies, interests, get to understand their personalities, qualifications, experience areas and types of services they're willing to support the users with.

Katter's Australian Party demands youth justice policy changes

The Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) have demanded action by the state government to change the youth justice system, after repeated juvenile incidents in Townsville.

KAP MPs are urging the government to reconsider the relocation sentencing policy, which aims to prevent juveniles from being incarcerated or back on the street where they can continue to be influenced.

This push comes after rural community businesses continue to struggle with the impacts of juvenile crime, and they feel as though no concrete solutions have been made to stop this cycle.

How COVID is affecting local artists

Sydney entertainer James Bustar has released a video on social media, drawing attention to the plight of about 30 performing arts workers from regional areas and capital cities. 

Eighty per cent of young artists according to the Hunter Research Foundation Centre have experienced increased stress and or anxiety and or depression as a result of COVID-19.

Mr Bustar says he made the video "because it was clear to me the arts community and the people who make it so vital were being overlooked, even though entertainment is one of the hardest-hit sectors”.
