Federal Labor to back an independent enquiry into anti-money laundering scheme

Federal Labor is expected to work with the Greens and independent back-benchers for a parliamentary enquiry into the country's anti-money laundering scheme. 

Labor Senator, Deborah O’Neill, is expected to announce a vote for an enquiry in parliament tomorrow to ensure the regime’s effectiveness. 

This comes after the Financial Action Task Force critiqued Australia as a “laggard on money-laundering globally”.

 

Plans to release 145,000 megalitres of water into Flinders River underway

The Queensland government has announced plans to release 145,000 megalitres of water into the Flinders River by the end of the year, with irrigators and mining companies competing for allocations.

Water Minister Glenn Butcher toured the area earlier this year looking at potential irrigation developments near Julia Creek, and Richmond.

Central Queensland pressured by mining union

Central Queensland is facing scrutiny from the mining union after a declared “renewable boom”. 

CFMEU's mining and energy division president, Steve Smyth, says there needs to be an independent body to support the transition to renewables and ensure adequate job creation for those in the mining industry. 

The Queensland government announced a two billion dollar investment into the renewables sector and 26 initiatives to develop wind and solar farms throughout rural Queensland in the state budget last week.

 

Chinese Swimmer banned from Tokyo Olympics

Chinese swimmer Sun Yang will not be eligible to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games being held later this year. 

Having been suspended previously for doping in 2014, Sun refused to cooperate with sample collectors in September 2018 and was banned from competing for another eight years. 
Despite the swimmer's doping suspension having been reduced by almost half in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the suspension will only allow him to participate at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

No recorded local coronavirus cases in Victoria overnight

Victoria has recorded no new local coronavirus cases overnight.

Victoria had a total of 51 active coronavirus cases as of Tuesday, and the state’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said 24 of those were local cases. 

In light of the low recent case numbers, public health authorities prepare to announce eased COVID restrictions. 

It is assumed people will be able to gather outdoors in groups of up to 50 and companies will be allowed to operate with 75 per cent of their workforce in the office.

 

Updated Border Closures

Queensland Premier, Annastasia Palaszczuk has announced border closures will commence this Thursday at 1am for some areas in New South Wales.  

 Sydney, Bayside, Woollahra, Canada Bay, Inner West and Randwick council areas  will all be barred from entry to Queensland, with local residents returning from those areas to be put into hotel quarantine. returning from those areas to be put into hotel quarantine.

The restrictions come after NSW recorded a cluster of cases with the highly infectious delta strain. 

 

Google under investigation by the EU

Google has come under investigation by the European Union, as regulators have launched an antitrust investigation. 

The company is under investigation due to stifling competition in digital advertising technology as Google favours its own display ad technology services hence, breaching the antitrust rules. 

The investigation underscores European Commission concerns about Google's dominance in the online advertising industry and whether it's exploiting its data advantage to cement its position in the display ad market.

 

New Zealand temporarily halts quarantine-free travel with NSW

New Zealand's quarantine-free travel bubble with NSW is being paused after the state's growing number of COVID-19 cases. 

It comes after New Zealand health authorities say that they are concerned about two recent cases with no clear links to confirmed infections.

New Zealand said it was pausing the travel bubble arrangement while the source of the new cases was investigated.
