Redlands Research Station Projects

The Redlands Research Facility manager Shane Holborn will be speaking at the Redlands Organic Growers Inc. meeting to share project plans.

Mr Holborn says “our latest focus is on high-tech, intensive horticulture and agriculture to help boost primary production across Queensland and in the process hopefully assist agricultural enterprises to select the Redlands for their base”.

The site is also soon to be host of the $7.5 million QUT hydrogen research plant.

Cystic Fibrosis Treatment Trials

Brisbane’s Prince Charles Hospital is trialling a new cystic fibrosis drug that manipulates a faulty gene into working effectively.

The pills are taken three times a day and work to reduce the excessive mucous that gathers on sufferers’ lungs.

Because the drug works in a matter of days, the hospital’s once overflowing wards now have free beds.

Australia’s obesity problem escalates

New data confirms Australia’s obesity problem is becoming more dire, with almost half of young adults now considered overweight or obese.

The survey data from The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ shows one million young adults fell into this category in 2017-2018, an 18 per cent increase in the number of young adults over a healthy weight in just three years.

Cancer patients unaware of infertility risk

A new Australian study shows that a significant number of cancer patients are not being told their treatment can cause infertility.

In a survey of 878 cancer survivors, just 46 per cent of men and 57 per cent of women reported their practitioners discussed with them the possibility of treatment causing infertility. 

Results from the study led by Western Sydney University showed doctors are focused on treating cancer and they often believe potential side effects of treatment to be out of their scope, or too time-consuming to deal with.

Direct flights from Perth to Shanghai will be trialled in 2020

Travellers will be able to fly directly between Perth and Shanghai as part of a five-week trial launching in the coming year, sparking a new era in Western Australia's tourism industry.

From January 15th, 2020 to the end of February 17, China Eastern Airlines will operate three flights a week during the Spring Festival season.

Western Australia Governor Mark McGowan said he expects the trial to attract more Chinese tourists to the state during peak travel periods to promote tourism in Western Australia.

 

Adults ridicule children for taking action on climate change protest

Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg said on Friday that she did not understand why adults and world leaders would ridicule children and adolescents for acting on science in response to attacks on her campaign as students conducted the second wave of global protests for the climate change.

When asked about US President Donald Trump and other people who laughed at her, the 16-year-old activist said that they are likely to believe that their worldview and interests are being threatened by climate activism.

 

Dengue Fever Eradicated

Far North Queensland has been declared free of Dengue Fever for the first time in a century thanks to a mosquito breeding program.

Scientists from the World Mosquito Program (WMP) say that the virus has all but disappeared from the Cairns population since an eradication program began in 2011.

Scientists have been injecting the Wolbachia bacteria into the mosquito population through a staggered breeding program.

QLD Government’s Adani Deadline Extended

The Queensland Government has extended the deadline for a royalties agreement with Adani, which was due yesterday.

The government and the Adani coal mine have now mutually agreed to push back the deadline to November 30.

However, Adani says that construction is not dependent on the Royalty Deferral and Repayment Agreement, meaning construction may begin before the new deadline.
