Highway overpass collapses in Indian city of Kolkata

At least one person has died after a highway overpass collapsed in the India city of Kolkata.

5 cars and a bus fell to the ground as a 30 metre concrete segment of the highway gave way.

An anonymous official told the ABC more than 20 people have been taken to hospital and officials are unsure how many people remain trapped under the bridge.

Brisbane City Council to offer cloth nappy rebate

The Brisbane City Council is set to introduce a new cloth nappy rebate this financial year to encourage the use of reusable nappies.

Disposable nappies in Brisbane are among the largest single-waste stream made up of a single product, accounting for almost 4 percent of general household waste.  

The Sustainable Nappy Cashback initiative will offer $300 rebates to one family per month to use cloth nappies.

Angry owl attacks force location shift for Mt Coot-tha zipline

Zipline Australia has revealed the location shift of their new Mt Coot-tha Reserve zipline was due to potential attacks from powerful owls.

Conservation groups including Birds Queensland and Birdlife Australia had previously raised concerns about risks to the species and potential owl attacks on patrons of the zipline.

Birdlife Australia project officer Beth Mott said the owls, which have nested in parts of the Mt Coot-tha Reserve for at least 30 years, are quite reactive to things going on in their environment.

Timber Creek native title compensation claim brings High Court to NT for first time

The High Court is in the Northern Territory for the first time in history to hear the Timber Creek native title compensation case.

This will set a precedent about how to calculate native title compensation and is hailed as one of the biggest test cases in indigenous rights since Mabo.

The Ngaliwurru and Nungali peoples are seeking compensation for acts done by the NT Government in the 1980’s and 90’s, including the building of infrastructure and public works.

Labor government plans to take back Great Barrier Reef Foundation funding

The Labor Government has written to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, warning them not to spend too much of its grant money as they believe a change of Federal Government will come soon.

The Coalition handed the Foundation nearly half a billion dollars in June without any competitive tender process and without the Foundation actually asking for it.

New Zealand journalist detained on Nauru

A New Zealand journalist has been detained for several hours on Nauru after interviewing an Iranian refugee.

Barbara Dreaver, from TVNZ, was in Nauru to attend the Pacific Islands Forum but has now been stripped of her media accreditation.

Dreaver had been told by Nauru media officials she was permitted to talk to refugees as long as she didn’t go into a camp to do so and received the refugee’s permission.

Spain ends Saudi Arabian missile trade

The Spanish Defence Ministry has confirmed plans to end the sale of missiles to Saudi Arabia over concerns the weapons would be used on civilians.

The ministry launched a process to cancel the contract with Saudi Arabia and return the $10 million already paid for 400 laser-guided missiles.

According to Amnesty International, Spain is the fourth-largest provider of military equipment and weapons to Saudi Arabia.

New water development plans

Brisbane City Council’s new water development plans will see more than 20 long-term boat moorings removed.

The Brisbane City Council is proposing to build a river walk and access hub for water taxi services, privatised motorised boats, jet-skis, canoes, and kayaks.

With more residents living on the water due to rising housing costs, Greens councillor Jonathan Sri [shree] says the council needs to ensure there are enough moorings available in the inner city.
