Review: The Longest Minute

 

The Longest Minute is a Queensland Theatre performance centered on rugby league performing at Queenland Performing Arts Centre. When a slight miscommunication about which play I was attending occurred, I realised that life is full of pleasant surprises and I am glad I got to experience The Longest Minute first hand.

Bushwalking Brisbane group celebrates 70 years

The Brisbane Bushwalkers Club is celebrating 70 years of being more than a walking group as they look  at their history of rescues, overseas adventures and lasting friendships.

The group have been exploring Brisbane since 1948 and in 1955 the group were the first to the tragic scene of the Lincoln Bomber crash at Mt Superbus, a mercy flight that lost everyone on board.

This year the more than 800 members will hold a dinner in July that will showcase their history.

Trevor Evans confident of retaining seat of Brisbane after Andrew Bartlett’s early resignation

Brisbane MP Trevor Evans said he believed voters in his electorate will not risk a greens MP claiming the seat at the next federal election, as Andrew Bartlett resigned from the senate to focus on his run for Brisbane.

Former senator Larissa Waters will return to the senate to take Bartlett’s place, said she hoped to make a return as she feels there is still work to finish regarding the environment and cleaner politics.

Australian doctors calling for dying refugee to be brought from Nauru

More than 800 Australian doctors have signed a petition calling on immigration Minister Peter Dutton to bring a dying refugee from Nauru for care.

The 63-year-old Hazara man has advanced lung cancer and is in need of palliative care.

It’s reported that the Australian Border Force told the man he had to stay in Nauru despite pleas from doctors that the care was inadequate.

Report calls for Australian firms to catch up on climate change

A new thinktank report has found that Australian organisations were not doing enough to model the risks of climate change and how it will affect their profitability.

The Centre for Policy Development says that while organisations have committed to considering the issue in their strategy, too few were using scenario analysis techniques to model impacts and responses.

Diversity zone blocked from opening at World Cup

A safe space to celebrate the achievements of minorities in soccer was suddenly pulled by the company renting out the venue near the fan zone of the World Cup in St Petersburg.

The space named Diversity House was organised by several NGOs, with Piara Powar, executive director of the anti-exclusion FARE network saying the space was designed to celebrate diversity in in football, in light of concerns about racist chants at the World Cup and the human rights situation in Russia.

State of Emergency declared in Papua New Guinea after riots.

Papua New Guinea Prime minister Peter O’Neill declared a state of emergency for nine months after riots in Southern Highlands last week.

Armed forces have been sent out to deal with rioters angry over the failure of a court challenge to a regional governor’s election.

Major damage was caused as warehouses were looted, buildings were torched and an airplane was burned in Mendi, the capital of the Southern Highlands province.
