Boat loads of trouble for Logan Mayor

Logan Mayor, Luke Smith, is still refusing to answer questions regarding him receiving a luxury boat from a campaign donor.

 

Smith was asked repeatedly to give either a yes or no answer during an ABC radio interview but said the allegations were not accurate.

 

He is due to face court next month on corruption charges.  

Coral spray to protect our reefs

A liquid spray that could protect coral along the Great Barrier Reef is being trialled by a team of researchers.

 

The spray is biodegradable, 50 000 times thinner than a human hair and sits on the surfae of water above corals to protect against the sun’s UV and light.

 

Trials that have already begun report that the spray reduces the amount of light reaching the coral by 20% which improves coral health.

Sky high upgrades

Qantas is aiming to have flights directly from Australia to London and New York by 2022, but it could look very different to what you fly now.

 

It’s called “Project Sunrise” and the ambitious plan will introduce a “super long-haul” aircraft into service that can allow passengers to stretch and walk around in an exercise area.

 

The airline also hinted at Jetstar flights starting to fly to European holiday destinations.

Tasman marine heatwave deemed a 'major climate event'

A “marine heatwave” in the Tasman has scientists calling for the high temperatures to be documented as a “major climate event.”

 

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist, Dr Blair Trewin says the changes are a result of climate change and over Summer it was “exceptionally warm on both sides of the Tasman.”

 

Malcolm Turnbull attacks Churches for indifference on child sexual abuse

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has blasted Australia's churches for ‘indifference’ and ‘resistance’ in a letter about child sexual abuse.

 

Turnbull is trying to pressure the major Australian churches into circumventing the states and immediately join the national redress scheme for survivors of child sexual abuse.

 

Thousands protest in Siberia after leisure complex fire

Thousands of people were protesting in the Siberian city of Kemerovo, angry at Russian officials over the leisure complex fire that killed at least 64 people.

 

President Vladimir Putin has blamed criminal negligence for Sunday’s blaze.

 

Relatives say dozens of people are still missing following the fire.

ATO investigating holiday home tax deductions

The Australian Taxation Office is cracking down on holiday home owners wrongly claiming tax deductions.

 

The ATO assistant tax commissioners Kath Anderson said too many holiday home owners were claiming deductions for properties that were not actually available for rent.

 

Ms Anderson said one man declared earning $27,000 income from a property yet claimed $760 thousand dollars  in deductions on a property that was only available for rent 13% of the year.

Brisbane could be getting a new Craft beer

Craft beer giant, BrewDog has bid for a new “kick-ass” Brisbane brewery to contend in the city’s beer landscape.

 

The Scottish company plans to build a $30 million production facility, tap room and restaurant in Murarrie.

 

BrewDog sales have been on the rise over the past twelve months and have acknowledged our country’s love for cracking a cold one saying “Australia is as dynamic a place as exists on earth at the moment when it comes to beer.”

Transgender Army Officer's wedding marred by offensive headline

Transgender Army officer, Hannah Winterbourne, has had her wedding tarnished by offensive headlines from the Sun newspaper in the UK.

 

Captain Winterbourne and her new husband Jake Graf, a transgender actor and director, were shown alongside the headline “Tran and Wife”.

 

Although, the couple praised the positive article about their marriage earlier this month, they said the headline was ‘sensationalised and misleading’.
