Far North Queensland is back on flood-watch

Parts of Far North Queensland are back on flood-watch as the ex-tropical cyclone Nora trails her way across Queensland from the Gulf of Carpentaria.

In Cairns, more than 40 people were evacuated from a caravan park were calls for help to emergency services started at midnight, including one family with a small child who smashed the back of their campervan to escape rising waters.

Catchments and river systems in the area are already at high-levels from previous flooding in the year.

Commonwealth Games worker struck by fence

A Commonwealth Games worker has been struck in the face by a temporary wire fence outside Carrara Stadium yesterday afternoon as a helicopter was taking off.

An unnamed motorist told the Gold Coast Bulletin a massive section of the fence just came crashing down.

The worker was treated by an on-site medical team before being taken to Gold Coast University Hospital and treated for laceration to his forehead.

Museum for Iconic Australian Loos to be opened

A museum for loo’s, the first of its kind for Australia, has opened Tuesday morning next to the Brisbane Luggage Point Sewage Treatment Plant.

The new memorial was part of a national campaign to celebrate the humble toilet’s part in Australian history.

Over 100 people have contacted The Guardian with child sexual abuse cases within the UK’s Jehovah Witness communities.

Labour MP Sarah Champion said whenever there is a closed society with an inherent power imbalance, the potential for abuse is there.

Several MPs have demanded government action and have said it’s not only a historical issue but an ongoing child safety concern.

Pakistan’s hires first transgender news anchor

Pakistan hired its first transgender news anchor following the Senate vote to support a bill protecting the rights of transgender people.

Journalism graduate, Marvia Malik, hoped her work would improve the lives of Pakistan’s transgender community.

Transgender people in Pakistan face discrimination with many being forced into begging, dancing or prostitution to earn money.  

Australia follows suit in expelling Russian intelligence officers

The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister announced they will expel two Russian intelligence officers from the Russian Embassy in Canberra.

The government said the diplomats will have seven days to leave but said the decision was made in response to the use of chemical weapons by Russians on a former spy in Britain.

This followed eighteen other countries including Britain and the United States who also expelled Russian diplomats.

Australia pushes to be part of UK trade future

The Australian Trade Minister, Steven Ciobo pushed for Australia to become part of free trade opportunities enabled by Brexit.

Ciabo paid tribute to the enduring bonds between Australia and the UK and states that some painful adjustments in business sectors will be for the greater good.

The aspiration was for the UK and Australia.

UQ senior academic quit after sexual assault allegation

A University of Queensland senior academic has quit amid a sexual assault allegation.

The allegation did not involve students, and it has been understood that he was accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague during a work trip.

The university said it sought advice from the Crime and Corruption Commission, which confirmed it was appropriate for the university to investigate the allegation.
