Gold Coast Wheelchair Builder Charity sends extra bikes to Africa
The Wheelchair Aid Project in the Gold Coast are beginning to ship their excess bicycles to Africa after receiving an influx of old bikes following their plea for materials in 2015.
The Project, which uses old bicycles to create wheelchairs for people in third world countries, have had an ‘unbelievable result’ from the community donating bikes, with over 3,000 bikes in their possession.
$20 million sports centre sheds staff amid Russia probe
A $20 million sports centre at Carrara on the Gold Coast is apparently shedding staff after their Russian billionaire owner was linked to a devastating mall fire in Siberia on March 25 which killed 64 people.
Employees of KDV Sport, which opened 18 months ago, said a number of full-time maintenance staff had left or been axed in the past few weeks.

Australian Nun ordered to leave Philippines
An Australian Nun has been ordered to leave the Philippines by President Rodrigo Duterte after allegedly being involved in activities against the Country’s Government.
Seventy-one year old Patricia Fox, who has lived in the Philippines for 27 years was accused last week of participating in activities such as rallies, press conferences and fact finding missions by President Duterte, who has called her an ‘undesirable alien’.
Macron delivers friendly yet forceful speech to US Congress
French President Emmanuel Macron has made an hour-long speech to a joint sitting of the US Congress directed primarily at US President Donald Trump.
Mr Macron, an ally and friend of Mr Trump, was both friendly and forceful during his speech speaking on a range of issues, including Syria, the Iran nuclear deal, free trade and the Paris climate accord, all of which the two Presidents disagree on.
Mr Macron is confident the US will rejoin the Paris climate agreement and said, “Let us work together to make our planet great again.”
Music for Manus and Nauru detainees
Around 100 musical instruments are today being shipped to asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island to help “combat the stress of life in detention”, with the Federal Government covering transport costs.
It’s thanks to charity ‘Music for Refugees’ founder Philip Feinstein, who put out a call for donated instruments several months ago and was “overwhelmed” by the response.
‘Music for Refugees’ was formed 10 years ago and this will be their first delivery to Manus Island and second to Nauru.
The instruments are expected to arrive next week.
Medicare Levy Scrapped, What does this mean for NDIS Funding?
The plans for a Medicare Levy increase to cover funding for the National Disability Insurance Scheme will be ditched by the Federal Government at this year’s Budget meeting.
The planned Medicare Levy increase from 2 percent to 2.5 percent, which was introduced at last year’s Budget and predicted to raise over 8 Billion dollars for the NDIS by July 2019, has now been deemed unnecessary by Treasurer Scott Morrison who said Government can find $8 billion elsewhere .
XXXX workers to strike again today
Workers at Milton’s XXXX Brewery will strike again today for three separate 1-hour work stoppages, their fourth walkout in an ongoing dispute with owner’s Lion over the use of contract workers.
There is also a suspicion that Lion plans to shift production interstate, although they have vehemently and repeatedly denied this.
Damien Davie from workers union United Voice Queensland, said, “We want to negotiate in good faith, to get a good outcome for brewery workers, but XXXX is refusing to come to the table.”
Plans to be unveiled for development of parkland
A draft of detailed restoration plans for Brisbane City’s Oxley Creek will be released today by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, following council’s plan to convert the flood-prone creek into Brisbane’s largest parkland.
Councillor Quirk says the Oxley Creek transformation project is the first step in revitalising the creek corridor into a 1000-hectare world-class green, lifestyle and leisure destination.
