France's far-right National Rally (RN) fails to win their first ever region, as results from the second round of regional elections come in. The election also recorded low turnout of less than 30%.

The winners are the mainstream right whose candidates held on easily to the regions they already controlled. One of them, the former minister Xavier Bertrand, is now openly a candidate for the presidency next year.


 

Woolloongabba to build veloway cycle bridge

Woolloongabba is set to build a new veloway cycle bridge. 

The bridge will be built above O’Keefe St, connecting the inner city cycle network to two sections of the veloway.

It is expected to make bike riding quicker and safer in the Brisbane CBD. 

People with disabilities, using wheelchairs and other mobility aids, will also have more freedom to move and manoeuvre without fear of blocking the way for cyclists.

Crash on the Brush Highway near Kybong causing delays

The Bruce Highway is closed in both directions near Kybong following a serious traffic crash. 

Paramedics are on scene at a serious vehicle and truck crash on the Bruce Highway that is causing lengthy delays.

Diversions are placed however significant delays are expected. Motorists are urged to seek an alternative route.

Lawyers and advocates are campaigning for stronger anti-discrimination laws in Queensland. The 30-year-old laws continue to label racist abuse as “wilful damage”, rather than as a hate crime.

The Cohesive Communities reform group has been at the centre of the push to redefine racist abuse, and tighten laws. As a result a parliamentary Inquiry is now underway.


 

Sydney expects increase in COVID-19 cases

Sydney expects COVID-19 cases to grow as the state enters the first week of lockdown.

With more than 30 new locally acquired cases and a growing list of exposure sites, the New South Wales Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, warns case numbers will likely increase as infected individuals start showing symptoms.

Ms Berejiklian says the outbreak of the highly-contagious Delta strain means entire households could become infected quickly, so lockdown was necessary to prevent further spread.


 

Major Australian companies not funding superannuation increase

More than a quarter of Australia’s top 20 listed companies will not fund the superannuation increase for all employees from July 1st, but will instead deduct it from take-home pay.

The Superannuation Guarantee - compulsory superannuation paid on top of ordinary earnings - goes up from 9.5% to 10% on July 1st.

Jane Hume, the Minister for Superannuation, Financial Services and the Economy, says Australians were warned this would happen.

A spokesperson for the Fair Work Ombudsman says the legality would depend on the wording of the individual employment agreement.

Orlando nightclub Pulse declared a national memorial site

US President Joe Biden signs a law that designates a former nightclub Pulse, which was the scene of a deadly mass shooting, as a national memorial site.

Pulse was one of the biggest and most popular gay clubs in Orlando where a gunman killed 49 people in 2016.

There are plans to transform the site of the former nightclub into a permanent memorial site. It will include an open-air museum and a reflecting pool, as well as an education centre with gardens, and a public plaza.


 

COVID-19 exposure sites list released by Queensland Health

Queensland Health authorities listed more COVID-19 exposure sites linked to the recent hotel quarantine breach.

Locations include the DFO Shopping Centre, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, and various gyms and stores across Brisbane’s inner city suburbs.

Authorities are urging anyone with COVID-19 symptoms to immediately get tested and stay at home.
