Morrison calling on border exemptions for the vaccinated

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called on state and territory leaders to consider border closure exemptions for people who have been fully vaccinated.

 

Mr Morrison says this reward would encourage more people to get the vaccine.

However, state governments might not be on board.

Queensland’s Premier Anastacia Palaszczuck has previously described the exemptions as a vaccine passport, and New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejkilian says citizens should be free to move around the country regardless of vaccination status.

 

Victorian man on terrorist-related chargers released from prison early

A Victorian man convicted of terrorist-related offences has been freed from prison early, with 9 months remaining on his sentence.

Adam Brookman, who has been in custody since July 2015, pleaded guilty to one charge of foreign-incursion last Wednesday, but has since been released.

 
The Victorian government’s decision is a result of good behavior during lockdowns in a pandemic. 

 

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews speaks alongside outraged Victorians, saying the situation is “absolute nonsense”.

 

Unmarked graves found at a Catholics school for Indigenous children

A second site of seven hundred and fifty unmarked graves has been discovered in Canada at a Catholic School for Indigenous children.

 

This comes after the first site which was discovered less than a month ago raised questions about the systemic abuse faced by Indigenous people in Canada.

 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls the discoveries, quote, “a shameful reminder of the injustices Indigenous people faced and continue to face.”

 

Toowoomba considered to be the new quarantine hub

Prime Minister Scott Morrison suggested the army barracks in Pinkenba to be the site for a new quarantine hub after rejecting the state government's request for a site near Toowoomba.

The site near Toowoomba at Wellcamp Airport was selected by the state government for being cost-effective and larger than the other options, but the federal government says the site fails to meet key requirements according to the quarantine hub criteria.

Cairns considers visitor tax

The Cairns Regional Council is considered a visitor levy to prop up the city’s struggling tourism industry.

Similar proposals in the past have centered on a 2.5% tax on visitor accommodation. 

The Council has called upon the State Government to change the legislation and allow the proposed levy, which is expected to generate sixteen million dollars annually to invest in the tourism industry.

 

PM backs NSW Government to keep Sydney open

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is backing the New South Wales government in keeping Sydney open, despite the city’s current Covid-19 outbreak. 

The decision comes after the state’s proposal to raise police activity, in order to apprehend offenders of the heavy new restrictions.

Despite experts calling for tougher measures, Mr. Morrison says ‘Sydney residents can feel confident that if anyone can get on top of this without shutting the city down, it’s the NSW government.’
