Work has been disrupted this morning on Adani’s Carmichael rail line on the Gregory Highway near Clermont, with two people locking themselves to machinery. The two men say their action is in solidarity with indigenous people oppressed by Adani’s coal projects in India and Australia

Endangered turtles return to the ocean

107 endangered loggerhead turtle hatchlings have been released into the ocean after they were rescued from the beach at Fingal Heads in northern New south wales.

Turtle Watch project officer Holly West said the eggs were laid late in the season, which meant they were at risk of dying due to low sand temperatures.

The eggs were incubated and hatched a few weeks later with a 97 percent success rate.

 

Perth casino watchdog cannot deal with criminals

The Perth Casino Royal Commission has heard that Western Australia's casino watchdog does not have the resources or skills to deal with money laundering or criminal infiltration.

Gaming and Wagering Commission member, Barry Sargeant, told the royal commission that they were aware these were risks but did not have any policies or procedures for dealing with the risks of criminal activity at the casino.

 

Joe Biden briefed on Israel

The White House says President Joe Biden is being briefed daily on developments in Jerusalem and Gaza, and has directed his team to engage intensively with senior Israeli and Palestinian officials as well as leaders throughout the Middle East.

It comes as reports of Israeli bombing raids across Gaza killing at least 32 people, including 10 children, according to Palestinian health officials.

 

The budget in Queensland

The federal budget has been released and focuses on Australia's recovery from the COVID-19 recession.

The budget predicts a decade of deficits and debt that's set to peak at almost one trillion dollars in 2025.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick has accused the federal government of "ripping off" Queenslanders over promised infrastructure spending.

Federal member for Bowman in Redland bay, Andrew Laming, has addressed parliament yesterday about his behaviour. 

After undergoing empathy training Laming said he had been misrepresented as a "stalker" and a "taxpayer-funded troll".

Laming addressed the photograph he allegedly took of a woman bending over without her consent as an “entirely appropriate workplace photograph".

New Migrants forced to wait years for welfare access

New migrants will be forced to wait four years before accessing most government welfare payments under a significant cost-cutting measure included in yesterdays federal budget.

The waiting period to receive welfare payments previously depended on a migrant’s situation and visa type, but the new measure brings most government subsidies and visa classes in line with the current four-year wait to access welfare payments to anyone granted permanent residency in Australia from January next year.

NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft begins its journey home

NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is beginning its journey home after collecting 200 to 400 grams of a mix of loose, unconsolidated rock from an asteroid.

The return voyage will take the robotic spacecraft two years to travel  2.3 billion kilometres.

It will be the biggest cosmic haul for the US since the Apollo moon rocks.
