Research finds new fish sounds

University of Queensland researchers designed a new speaker system with whole-brain imaging allowing them to observe how baby fish can hear a range of different sounds.

PhD candidate Rebecca Poulsen, who’s also DJ, says underwater acoustics is more complicated than air frequencies. 

The researchers are testing different sounds to see if the fish can discriminate between single frequencies, white noise, short sharp sounds and sound with a gradual crescendo of volume.

 

Environmental Activist and Adani face off in Supreme Court

Environmental activist, Ben Pennings, faced off against Adani lawyers yesterday at the Queensland supreme court.

Adani’s legal team applied to have information related to the case kept confidential from Mr Pennings.

They fear the environmental campaigner would use the information as a weapon against the company.

 

Liberal party releases code of conduct

The NSW Liberal party released an official code of conduct for members.

The code could see perpetrators expelled behaviour such as; bullying, sexual harassment, vilification, physical violence and discrimination deemed unacceptable behaviour 

The code requires NSW Liberal party staff, volunteers and members to “maintain a high standard of integrity and professionalism” and “treat each other with respect, courtesy and dignity”.

Senior Biden Administration officials are imposing sanctions and freezing assets on senior Russian government officials and Russian entities.

The US moves were being taken in coordination with the European Union, officials reiterated Mr Biden's call for Russia to release Mr Navalny from prison.

 

Nes development team created to meet population housing demand in Noosa

A new planning team set up by the Queensland State Government to ensure new developments between Tweed Heads and Noosa can manage the surge of new residents will be announced by Deputy Premier Steven Miles today.

Mr Miles says, from 2019 to 2020, there has been a 200 per cent increase in net migration from cities to regional areas. There has also been a 23 per cent increase in the use of our national parks and green spaces which must result in a fundamental rethink of the approach to infrastructure planning and delivery.

Heavy rain and hail storms lashed Brisbane yesterday afternoon, blacking out nearly 18 thousand homes and causing flash flooding that has left vehicles stranded.

Greenbank in Brisbanes South had more than 70 millimetres of rain dumped on it in 30 minutes

The State Emergency Service had more than 80 call-outs to homes for roof damage and downed trees, but no injuries were reported.

 

Former Queensland child protection police officer found guilty for grooming child

Former Police officer, Matthew Paul Hockley,  who worked in a child protection unit has been found guilty of grooming a young girl.

Hockley had met the child during an investigation with the child protection unit.

It took a jury more than five hours to find Hockley guilty, Hockley will be sentenced next week

 

More than 1500 VOCID-19 fines issued to Victorian teenagers.

Victorian teenagers racked up over fifteen hundred covid-19 related fines and only ninety seven have been paid so far.

Victorian police issued One thousand six hundred and twenty six COVID-19-related fines to minors during the pandemic.

Victorian Attorney-General, Jaclyn Symes (Sims) said 273 of the fines issued to Victorians aged under 18 have been withdrawn or cancelled.

SA Sexual harassment inquiry reveals inappropriate behaviour at workplace

After a review into sexual harassment in South Australia’s Parliament released yesterday Deputy Labor Leader Susan Close and Greens Member in the Legislative Council Tammy Franks, say the findings were upsetting but not surprising.

The review was ordered last year, after Liberal MP Sam Duluk was outed for inappropriate behaviour. A survey conducted by the Equal Opportunity Commission found that a quarter of survey respondents reported they had experienced sexual harassment in the parliamentary workplace.
