Netballers Stand Against Racism at Local Club

Nine Victorian netball players exit a local club in their stand against racism following an abhorrent slur used by their own teammate in an A-grade competition.

An incident took place this month during a local country A-grade netball game, as part of the Kyabram District League, located near Shepparton in regional Victoria. 

An investigation has been concluded by the Ardmona Football Netball Club with the player in question receiving a life ban and a 'strong recommendation' that she attend Cultural safety training.  

 

Argentina Introduces Gender-neutral Formal Identification Cards

Argentina has joined Canada, New Zealand and India following the announcement they have introduced gender-neutral formal identification cards.

President Alberto Fernandez said identities other than man and woman need to be respected.

President Fernandez had been an advocate for progressive social reforms, with his government legalising abortion last year. 

 

Indigenous Student Appointed First Nations Archive Advisor

An indigenous student at USC has been appointed by the State Government as the inaugural First Nations Archive Advisor at the Queensland State Archives.

Butchulla woman Rose Barrowcliffe said it will be a challenge to honour the histories and priorities of Queensland’s diverse First Nations peoples but she is excited to bring more untold recorded indegenous stories to light.

The Mt Gravatt Show Returns

One of Brisbane’s oldest exhibitions is on again this weekend with the Mt Gravatt Show returning for its 105th year. 

The Mt Gravatt show was cancelled last year for the first time since WWII, as it joined the likes of the Ekka as another major drawcard that fell victim to the pandemic.

Southsiders are excited for the exhibitions return this year with the event set to kickoff on 9am Saturday and finish with a fireworks display on the Saturday and Sunday night.

 

Palaszczuk Prolongs Tokyo Visit

Annastacia Palaszczuk has confirmed she will attend the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Olympics after Olympic Committee President John Coates insisted the politician prolong her visit. 

Annastacia Palaszczuk previously said she would not be attending the ceremony after more than one hundred and thirty-two thousand Australians expressed concerns about the premiers' Tokyo visit.

In an interview with breakfast news program Sunrise this morning the state MP says she is not going to offend anyone in doing so.

 

NSW Lockdown Hurting The Construction Industry

The construction industry has warned of catastrophic consequences if the current 2 week shutdown of building sites is extended by the NSW lockdown. 

Australian Constructors Association CEO Jon Davies said it is likely that "a high number of companies would fold".

With lockdown fatigue setting in, the industry is making a push to get 200,000 employed construction workers in Greater Sydney back to work though the introduction of daily COVID-19 rapid antigen tests on building sites. 

 

Telenurse Service Proving Important For Prostate Cancer Patients

COVID-19 lockdowns are adding to the distress of prostate cancer patients and families, with the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia recording a recent spike in calls to their new telenursing service.

Since the opening of the new service in March, 870 cases have been managed and the foundation says this uptake of the service is important not only for supporting patients but also the future direction of patient care, highlighting the care gaps and how they can be filled.

India’s New Epidemic

India has recorded 45,000 cases of a deadly “black fungus” known as mucormycosis over the last 2 months, as a nationwide outbreak sweeps through COVID-19 patients.

The infection, while not directly COVID affiliated, usually strikes patients after recovery from the disease and was once considered very rare until cases became more frequent during the pandemic. 

Mucormycosis has been declared an epidemic in India as it slowly recovers from a devastating wave of COVID problems.

 

Temptation by the “Dark Side”

Crime and Corruption Commission chair Alan MacSporran said Accountants, lawyers and real-estate agents are being lured to the “dark side” by organised crime bosses. 

MacSporran said yesterday in an interview that high profile charges in recent years against individuals of the kind should have been a deterrent but sadly there hasn’t been any change. 

The “Systematic Problem” is due to the huge money that has been able to tempt those in the mentioned professions.
